Whats the most expensive foreign coin you've bought?

I hope these threads are interesting and not "bad" posts. I can't find anything really exciting to post about. But I was wondering what everyones most expensive coin was. Especially a gold coin if you've bought any.

The most expensive gold coin I bought was around $250, but I bought other coins with it and a few holders for a forum member here so it cost over 300 total

This is not a picture of the actual coin I bought but it is very, very close. I paid $180, which is the most I have ever paid for a coin. Don't tell my wife image

Wow thast it? Is it really from 1805? Thats old, and its in proof condition too! Wow. How big is it?
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,657 ✭✭✭✭✭
That was a gilt proof 1805 Irish penny. NGC PR64 CAM.

And it was a big coin. Not quite silver dollar sized, though.

Before you get excited, thinking it was a gold coin, it wasn't- it was a gilt proof, meaning it was made with gold plating over copper.

But it was still a 200-year-old cameo proof coin, and a rather rare one at that. An amazing piece.

I regret selling it and I was just kidding the buyer earlier tonight, asking him when he was gonna sell it back to me. image

I have out-of-town visitors, and not enough time to fool with trying to take pictures of the others with my poor photo skills.

I'm a bottom feeder, so the vast majority of the coins I buy are $25 or less. But occasionally I spring for purty ones I like. image

The most I've spent do date on a single coin is actually a recent acquisition:

Dimitri, thanks for the compliments! Your coins are awesome as well, and mine don't hold a candle to them...image Too bad you didn't raise your bid on the Pan-Pac; I thought it was every bit of a 64, and had wonderful rose/pink toning.

Probably this one from the American Numismatic Rarities auction (Bowers)
    Darkside in an American auction!

    AUCTION DESCRIPTION:

Great Britain. ca. 1625-42 unite of Charles I

138.6 grains. Bright yellow gold with rich violet-rose toning around the reverse legends. Some light hairlines and a trace of brightness from a long ago polishing, a minor consideration as this piece displays superb visual appeal. Bold strike with all legends complete, a lovely example of this Charles I issue worthy of a place in an advanced cabinet.

Grains not grams. In units of measurement, the grain is a unit of mass, originally based on the weight of one grain of barley. One gram of metric weight equals 15.4323584 grains. It was used in the past for older drugs such as aspirin, for bullets, and for precious metals. So, JZrarities' coin is about ~8.94 grams.

Jester, the Standing Knight coin, an ex icon of yours is a fascinating coin, I know that many countries issued it. I wonder what's the story behind the design.

edit: Preussen, what a coin!!! image Could you please PM me its price , to avoid upsetting members with heart problems? image

The most expensive in my collection is probably this Poland 50 zlotych pattern, struck in copper, dated 1924. Mintage is 105 pieces. It was for a gold coin that was never struck - the single gold specimen is in a museum in Warsaw.

This doesn't fit any of my active collections. I just like multiple talers and this one was priced right. In my "core" darkside interests (papal, folles of RIC 6) I can only think of a handful over $500; most of my money goes to national banknotes (where $1k seems to be the starting price these days!)
