No. I live one-half mile from work, so I can walk or ride a bicycle there.

Now these hurricanes and the needed relief efforts, on the other hand, WILL affect my collecting by diverting discretionary income. But they need food, clothing and medical care more than I need another coin, so I just count my blessings.

It is going to affect coin collecting negatively(and many ,many other things as well). Lower levels of disposable income equals less money for coins. It's simple economics.

In all likely hood the Columbus coin show this weekend, I will not be going to simply because of the fact that it is 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive one way and it will cost a bunch for gas if it is $3 to $4 a gallon.....

So I think that it will have a definite effect on the hobby.....

Since the prices are going up so high I'm going to take more Fridays off. Unfortunately that means I'll spend more time on eBay (I browse the forums at work but I don't actively search eBay) so I'll probably spend more money image.

The next Long Beach show should be a good test if gas prices
will be having an impact on coin shows. Dealers traveling the coin
show circuit have to be getting hit in the pocketbook if
they do a lot of driving. The average collector who doesn't
have a whole lot of money to spend on coins will probably be
    affected the most.

The dismal attended CSNS show last week might have been a clue on the higher gas price factor or the awful Michigan economy might have been a bigger factor. Who knows?

Ugh, yesterday gas was $2.69 and this morning $2.99 a gallon. Just bites. But it won't affect my collecting. After all, it's not that much more a month for my driving habits. Turning off the air conditioning will help. Never thought I'd see it this high before. Hopefully this will light a fire for alternative fuel sources.

    I've got a bid on a nice 1897 $20 I hope I win.

Not really. Unless they raise postage to cover fuel increases.

When I went to work this morning our gas was $2.56. When I went to lunch
it was $3.09. I sure won't be driving any distance to a show. I've been doing pretty
good on the BST forum lately. I think I'll stick with my local dealer and the BST forum
    for awhile.

Here in Atlanta we get all of our gasoline from the continental pipeline that comes up from the gulf. Rumors spread through town that there was less than a day's supply in the pipeline left. We had huge lines at gas stations and some gas stations posted prices over $5.50. image I expect to see some sanity tomorrow. The rumor was met this evening with the news that there is plenty of supply.

Dang Marty, If I had known this was going to happen today I would have been a little empathetic with you when you called me this morning complaining about the price of gas.image

For in town travel a Tomos moped, 100 miles per gallon. Out of town, Honda Helix, 50 miles per gallon. I'm a little disappointed in that one, I was expecting 60 mpg.

I live close to work, so it's not big deal for me.

However, one of my co-workers drives about 70 miles each day !!

We figured he spends about $2000 a year, just driving to work, plus his wifes gas, weekends, whatever. Also that was at $2.50.

At $3.50, add 40% for $2400 plus his wifes gas, weekends, whatever. OK, I like doing math, so lets say he make $50K, after taxes, medical, etc, lets say he brings home $40K (that probably generious). So atleast 10% of his take home goes into the gas tank. That's a lot !!!

I don't see how this will not hurt the economy. When this guy has $1000 less a year to spend on coins, toys, clothes.

Americans actually use less energy per person than we did 25 years ago.

As for me, I will skip a couple of shows including one coming up next week.

Making a decision to go to a show or buy a coin is nothing compared to what will come if we continue to see $3.00 and above gas. I have a friend who has a fleet of 500 trucks. The added cost of fuel cost him $70,000 last week. He is not alone . Eventually all this will be passed along to the consumer and our economy will take a severe nose dive. Buy Gold.

Ah, the joys of in-town living and telecommuting.

I can walk to food, coffee, post office, bank, FedEx, bars, and just about everything else I need. And I work from home.

If I wanted to park my car and leave it for a week, it would take some more time planning (i.e. make it to the walking distance FedEx and restaurants before they close) but I could do it.

It's a shame that this tragedy may finally make planning commissions rethink urban sprawl, extended exurbia, and new communities built to a non-walkable scale.

My personal coin budget will not be largely affected by gas price hikes (which, in the Washington DC metro, are hefty already and pushing $4 like elsewhere), but other aspects of my hobby/job will be: higher air travel costs to shows, greater expense to visit with friends and customers 1-2 hours away. etc.

If you've ever considered working from home (and taking a not-insubstantial home office deduction), this week may be the week to bring it up with your boss. A few days a week can save a lot of gas.

The gasoline situation is going to catch up with the entire economy. Here in Florida the worry is now how much gasoline is going to cost, whether there will be any gasoline to buy. The wife and I have hunkered down in the house, and we are driving as little as possible.

I lived through the gasoline lines of the 1970s, and that disrupted the economy badly. Down here if there is no gas, there are fewer tourists and less money coming into the state. A bad situation.

You can’t ignore this any longer. The situation is not good. We had a bad run of coin shows last fall because of the hurricanes. Looks like this year’s replay might be worse.

nwcs..... don't be fooled. (alternative sources) There is plenty of oil out there. The problem is distribution and taxes. We need to build MORE refineries, improve pipe lines, drill in Alaska, stop the regulations and demand lower gasoline taxes. These factors will increase supply, decrease demand therefore lower prices! Don't let those Environmental wacko's fool us, into believing the result of this high gas price is our fault, or the fault of Katrina! It's years of govnerment regulation, taxation and environmental laws. Anyone agree? image

    I agree with you wholeheartedly.

BUT we have got to go through the libeal judges in the courts, the environmental extremists and almost every member of the Democrat Congress to do it. These groups have been obstructing domestic oil refinery construction and oil production for years.

No, We usually go on a small road trip to the Wisconsin Dells about twice a Month, My wife goes to the Casino and She drops Me off at a Coin Shop about 10 miles away. She gambles and I buy Coins. If She wins, which is most of the time, I get My coins and gas for free. (This dealer has some awesome prices on Gold so its well worth it to me! She usually does pretty good and the last time we did this, I got a 1904 $20.00 Double Eagle and a 1853 $1.00 Gold Piece and a full tank of gas to get back home. Who knows what I'll get next! I've been eyeing up a nice $3.00 gold piece! Here's hoping! By the way, gas here in Milwaukee is at an average of $3.40 per gallon ...Ouch! image
I guess My answer to the question is it will not affect My spending on gold coins!

Nope, I just switched to driving the station wagon instead of the SUV, just got a new, better paying job. I only drive about 2 miles to work. If it gets worse, I have a bike.... Cut back on some other things I didn't need, like the cell phone. So I should have an amount to spend each month on my hobby(s). After all, what will everyone do when they can't watch TV anymore? At least we have our collections to keep us entertained! image:
