Hear, hear. Mark, that is very amazing. Just out of curiousity, why is Lou's facial expression different on the Collins and Hoag cards than it is on the rest of them?
"Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well."
AJW, You ask alot of interesting questions about rarity etc. I think market demand for early deceased and super rarities is really high. The major HOFers are also very sought after. I think those which are combination are thru the roof. Even though Gehrig signed lots of items, he only had 7yrs to sign cards from this set. By far he has both aspects covered. The flip sides are guys like Steve Larkin and Ed Brandt. Larkin played in two games total. EVER! He died in 1969. How many were signed? Who knows, but I'm sure his card will command alot of $$$. Brandt played 11yrs but died in 1944. I goy lucky!(see below)
Patience is definitely the M.O. for vintage auto set collectors. I started this set back in the 1980's when I was a teen. After a hiatus from collecting 1990 ish to 2004, I got back into it. I had 24 when I started again in 2004. I'm now up to 49. I've even passed on a few because of price. Dizzy Dean on ebay $1200. Lou Gehrig (61) for $4200 and now the Mastro Gehrig Beauty (37) $6900 and counting.
Mac, I never noted the difference before. I would say its because of the different series. Collins is from the mid number series. Hoag is from the High number series. The others are low numbers.
Mantle and Maris autos were received in 1976! So, no, they didn't just recently arrive in the mail. Probably couldn't afford them today. I was a seven-year-old kid.
Even saved the SASEs! Aside from the $.13 stamps, autos were free.
Just couldn't resist. I got this on the back of a menu from Mt. Airy Lodge in the Poconos when I met Joe. D. eating breakfast before a golf game with Gerald Ford back in the mid 1970's while I was on vacation with my family. He wasn't happy that some kid bugged him while he was eating but I was pretty darn happy.
1 out of 4 with none higher & the other 3 are in the top 3 sets of 75. Oh so happy to get this one as the O's are my team. Probably paid too much but it was a "must have" for me. Super happy!!
Can remember trying to ride my bike with a big stack of '75's, and wiping out at the end of our alley. By the time Mom stopped the bleeding, I returned to retrieve my cards and found they'd been run over a few times. Still have little gravel identations on them!
The 75 car is thesplendidsplinter's I was just helping a brother out with a pic! My 75 set has 9 cards in it and I have halted it for the time being. I love the set and have it raw in 7-8 quality however most would be OC.
Mike, the Hafey as well as these are all from eBay. I've gotten into slabbed HOF autos lately as a full time thing hobbywise, especially photos and postcards.
Just got these in today, love the Stengel with new friend Gladys from May 1965.
Vintage Kelly photo with a less-than-bold fountain pen signature, though the mini-me guy popping his head out on the right looks kind of scary.
<< <i>Nice stuff there Seraph and welcome to the collectors universe message boards. Nice to have new blood whom collects vintage even if it is baseball.
>>
Thanx! Hey... What do you mean "even if it's baseball"? My primary collection is pre-war thoroughbred racing.

there are no rules - except one - having fun!
I was just curious - since I seeing so much great stuff - to buy this all in a few weeks would require some serious coinage!

I got this one under SMR in the beginning of the year...I have been picking up nicely centered 52Ts since I think it's one of the best sets ever made!
And from the world of 63F's, I picked this Brooks up under SMR and I think it's high end 8.
Aint this shit great!!!
Got a personalized Mickey Cochrane auto on an old recipe card at my parents house . . . Very cool item. Wish I could produce a scan!
