This is one of about 6 or 7 baseball cards from that set, right? That's one of those sets that I'm going to pick up at some time in my life...congrats!

Well, since I am almost complete with my 1955 Topps set in PSA 6, I have started a 1958 Topps set in PSA 7 or better. I hope this is as much fun as the 1955s. I was going to go with the 1960 set, but I wanted to get away from the horizontal pics. Plus there is a great player selection in this set. Heres one I picked up the other night.
<< <i>i think you're right hof, that is a sweet card, stupid planes , killed to many people way before their time >>
Thanks... Yea, I wasn't a baseball fan in his day, but I could imagine how the tragedy affected baseball fans across america at the time...next to mantle and griffey, he has to be one of fan's favorite in his era.
oh yea..i can think of a couple other cards in the set that are nicer - i forgot about the barrel cards (grin)
<< <i>i think you're right hof, that is a sweet card, stupid planes , killed to many people way before their time >>
Wasn't the plane. They had people loading it that had never loaded planes before and they were loaded all wrong, the weight wasn't balanced. IIRC the plane made it 1000 yards or so.
All his life Clemente would tell anyone who would listen that he would die young, probably in a plane crash. He had nightmares.

You may be right, but the plane was also a pile of junk.
I have two or three of these ungraded, but always cool to pick up a high graded jersey card. About half the time I see this for the sale on ebay the seller claims it to be from a Pro Bowl jersey. The photo does show Young in his Pro Bowl jersey but no where on the card does it say the jersey piece is Pro Bowl related. (Did Topps have the Pro Bowl jersey contract in 2004? They did a couple years around there.)
A few for my 83 Donruss registry...
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Don't know how you can say that, it hadn't had a wreck in almost a month!
It's tragic, so many things came together to end a great man's life.

Indeed interesting and sad...excerpt from wikipedia Clemente spent much of his time during the off-season involved in charity work. When Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, was affected by a massive earthquake on December 23, 1972, Clemente (who had been visiting Managua three weeks before the quake) immediately set to work arranging emergency relief flights.[35] He soon learned, however, that the aid packages on the first three flights had been diverted by corrupt officials of the Somoza government, never reaching victims of the quake.[36]
Clemente decided to accompany the fourth relief flight, hoping that his presence would ensure that the aid would be delivered to the survivors.[37] The airplane he chartered for a New Year's Eve flight had a history of mechanical problems and sub-par flight personnel, and it was overloaded by 5,000 pounds. It crashed into the ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico immediately after takeoff on December 31, 1972.[38] A few days after the crash, the body of the pilot and part of the fuselage of the plane were found. An empty flight case apparently belonging to Clemente was the only personal item recovered from the plane. Teammate Manny Sanguillen, a catcher and Clemente's best friend, was the only member of the Pirates not to attend Roberto's funeral. He chose instead to dive into the waters where Clemente's plane had crashed in an effort to find his teammate. Clemente's body was never recovered.[38]
A few of today's cards. I am hoping Gaffney gets the Super Bowl MVP award.

With my spending most of the past 2 weeks on travel for work my mailbox runeth over and today was like Christmas as I got to tear through 30+ packages. Here are a couple of the highlights for me at least...
First up, a Fred Taylor GAI authenticated autographed mini-helmet. This pick up leaves me just needing Warrick Dunn to complete my top 25 all-time NFL rushers autographed mini-helmet collection:
Next up, the item I was possibly most jazzed about getting for some reason, even though it was under $10 delivered. It's a bottle of Earl Campbell's All Purpose Seasoning that makes a nice addition to my autographed Earl photo (JSA) of the same pose.
With this World League of American Football (WLAF) gameball I have finished off my set of official gameballs from various football leagues (USFL, WFL, XFL, AFL, CFL, WLAF, NFLE, and the NFL itself).
Although I already had a loose XFL official game ball for my set, I was stoked to pick this one up complete in the original packaging and with tag for about 1/3rd of what they typically go for on eBay. With patience and persistence there are still bargains to be had on eBay!
