Veryfine - Thank you for a well thought-out response to my last post.

It all depends on what you want to collect. Yes, you can pick up many dates of PF 66 Liberty Nickels for half of the price of a MS coin in the same grade. However, the PF coins are far more available in grades above PF 65 than their MS counterparts.

The 85 is THE key date of the series, so I think in this respect, I think there will be more buyers for this coin at any grade, versus a conditionally scarce date like the 06 in MS 66. I think one reason why there isn't much interest in the series is because most of them, even Uncs and PFs, are ugly coins.

Yes, you won't break the bank completing a set of them in MS 63 -- and it is far more doable than with Buffalo Nickels - or especially Barber Quarters. But, IMO, you won't have an attractive set of coins. I've seen many of them and have yet to see one below MS 65 that I'd want in my collection.
In MS 63 and MS 64, you're typically looking at coins with eyecatching contact marks, splotchy urine-colored toning, stains and / or spotting, and underwhelming eye appeal.

To a large degree, pricing depends on what people want at the moment. Re Barber Quarters, many people are paying serious money for New Orleans and San Francisco mint coins in MS 66, and virtually ignoring Philadelphia mint coins which are conditionally far more scarce than the mentioned 'O' and 'S' mint counterparts.

    Thanks Elcontador,
Your comments are thought-provoking as well.
I know what you mean when it comes to Liberty Nickels in 63 and 64, but a good strategy, for those who can afford it, would be to get most of the 20th century issues in 65 and the earlier ones in 63 or 64. Sometimes, Liberty nickels in 63 or 64 have few marks and decent color but not the greatest luster. Personally, I can deal with that. But, think about other series in 63 or 64. Peace dollars don't always look good in those grades and Barber coins often have unattractive eye-appeal to boot. I think your standards are higher than mine, but also keep in mind that at least in my case, the price limits my goals. In 63, the set still seems like a good deal, despite the lack of superb coins available. Naturally, a set of Liberty Nickels in MS-66 would be far more impressive, but sometimes we can't get what we want.

Nice thought provoking thread folks. Enjoyable.

Veryfine in response to the two questions you asked me a couple of days ago. I have been searching for Collector Car parts and have became road weary for two days. I would not be comfortable about buying either in MS65, 66 or 67. Those coins are completely out of the collecting realm I have. In essence I would revert to the thinking that you have and stick to a 63 or 64. Now for the but. If more knowledge was consumed about the two series probably the comfort factor would come forth.

    Again, nice thread folks...image
