Calling all crackout fans! What was your biggest "upgrade?"

I had a trade dollar in an old pci slab (the original kind with the photo), and it went from a vf-20 to an ef 40. Twenty points and several hundred dollars for me! Woo hoo!

What is highest "bump" you have gotten either on the numerical scale or financially? I kknow some coins go for tripple the aount for one ms point. So...how abut it?

(Let's not debate the ethics of gradeflation. This is just for fun.)

    A 1967 PCGS MS65CAM SMS Kennedy that is now a PCGS MS67DCAM. Paid $35, now worth about $1000. Oh yeah, and it's a Birthmark Die.

    Early Quarter go from an NGC-45 to a NGC-58
    A PCI 1795 $1 go from a VG-10 to a PCGS-20 (submitted in the PCI holder)
    A 1921 SLQ in a PCGS-63 to a PCGS-65 (submitted in the holder)

  • 1843-O dime from NGC XF40 to PCGS XF 45 (population 4/2). Financial bump of about $1k. A straight cross would have resulted in a financial bump of around $500.

    I kinda liked the Bust half dollar cracked from an MS 62 holder (under a grand) and upgraded to PR 64 (over 20K).

    A 1893S Morgan in F-15 for $1600 at B/M Auction in 2002, that was regraded at PCGS as a VF-25. I suppose a $3,500 upgrade if I wanted to sell it.

    I have had a couple PR64-PR65CA, MS63-MS64 and one MS64-MS65.

    The biggest $$ I know of was a MS67 1913 Buffalo that went to MS68 ($13,500 profit on the upgrade). My dealer did this one last year.

    Nicely toned Antietam in an MS-64 rattler upgraded to an MS-67. I took the coin two years ago as payment for a $150.00 debt. So, I guess it was not only a major upgrade, it was also very worthy of a "YOU SUCK" as well...image

    2. 1796 Dollar, AU50 to Au55
    3. 1795 Flowing Hair dollar, AU53 to Au55
    4. 1796 half dollar VF25 to VF35
    5. 1796 quarter VF35 to XF40

    1901 Morgan dollar went from PCGS MS62 to NGC MS63... an $8600 bump. Sold it to the first upgrader who saw it.

    I've also had two different 1901 VAM 3 doubled die reverses regrade from PCGS XF45 to PCGS AU53 in the holders.
    When in doubt, don't.

    There are lots of upgrades here. Is it a case of current grade inflation, or were the coins undergraded the first time?

    I did have a proof mercury dime go from a PF65 to a 67. The grades were correct both times. I improved the coin after cracking it out.

    1936 Lincoln 1c PCI PR60 Cleaned -> ANACS PR63 RB
    1951 Roos 10c PCGS PR66 -> PCGS PR67CAM
    1938-D Walking Lib. 50c PCI MS61 Rim Ding -> ANACS MS63
    1895-O Morgan $1 PCI VF30 -> ANACS AU50

    All old PCI slabs, of course.
  • I did not even have to crack it out. I had a 1935 Washington go from a MS66 NGC to a MS67 PCGS. The coin was an obvious undergrade with circular die polishing which is common with many high mint state 1934 and 1935's so the ngc grader took a point off for it and PCGS knew that it was not an issue. The 1934 Medium Motto MS68 that Man of Coins has is a prime example of this. It is the one and only and I had it in my hand at the Long Beach Show last year.

    My best was cracking out an 1938 ANACS PR65 Lincoln and having it come back PCGS PR65 Cameo.

    1961 ACG PR-69 DCAM Jeff (for $7, forgive me) ... PCGS PR-69 CAM (and, I still argue for DCAM)
    1938 NGC PR-62 Jeff proof ... PCGS PR-66 (post-bath)

    In the past few years only really a couple:

    1904 $20 Lib from PCGS 64 to NGC 65
    A pair of MS 62 and 63 ANACS Bust halves that both went NGC 64.

    But in the 1988-1990 I had several dozen key upgrades of which these were most somewhat financially rewarding:

    1854 half from MS64 to MS65 (gained $7000)
    1838-0 dime was cracked out twice : first from a NGC64 to a
    PCGS 63 (ouch), and then a month later cracked it again from
    PCGS 63 to NGC MS65 (a gain of $8200 from first purchase)
    This one was interesting as I bought it raw at auction as a 64
    and ended up with 3 diff grades on the same coin 63,64,65!

    My best (though not necessarily the biggest point gain) was a 1904 $20 Liberty that went from old PCI green label MS62 to PCGS MS64.

    I seldom play the crackout game, as I'm not a frequent submitter, but it was plain as day that this $20 was vastly undergraded.

    I had a Maryland commem PCI graded xf 45 that was crackout and came back PCGS MS62. That was a suprise because it was for my low grade commem set. Then when I have a dateless $2.50 Susqui gold it somes back bodybagged as cleaned.

    Just have to respond as I just received payment for the sale of my crackout of a NGC MS-63 Red 1922-D Lincoln Cent. Graded by PCGS as MS-64 Red 1922 Weak-D sold last month at St Louis Heritage Sale for $5K! imageBefore crackout.imageAfter crackout in new PCGS holder. Didn't think it would sell that high but sure was pleased with the outcome.
