Wish you guys were with me today ...

... after lunch, I stopped in a local antique shop. They had a few Morgans in a case and I asked to see them. Well, the owner said that he had hundreds of them in the back and asked me if I wanted to look at them. Of course, I jumped at the chance and went through bags and bags of coins, rolls of morgans, peace dollars, franklins, liberty quarters, mercury dimes, indian pennies ... thousands of them. Unfortunately, I had no idea what I was looking for so all that I bought were two PCGS slabbed MS64 common dates that he asked $10 a piece for. I am positive that someone with a Cherry Pickers book would have had a field day in there. I am going to do some research and head back later in the week ... hopefully to find some treasures :-)

Off topic: I had an even better find yesterday. A 5 foot tall 200 pound minke whale skull washed up on the beach in front of my house yesterday. I dragged it through the sand and burried it under my house. I called the local natural history museum and they are going to mount it and put it on display with a plack attributing the donation to my family. Kind of cool :-)

Yeah, I wish I was with you too. I can't remember the last time I had a minke whale skull wash up in my front yard.

Seriously, now I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. That's a collector's dream right there. PCGS slabbed 64 whats? Are the raw coins uncirculated? Tell us more. Did you say you are still pretty new to coins?

About half were uncirculated in rolls, and half were in those old white cardboard protectors. Only two were slabbed and I bought those. Unfortunately, no CC's which was all that I knew to look for at this point. Several half dimes, but they fairly well worn. While I was there, some junky came in and sold the owner 150 indian head cents in a zip lock bag for $50. I'll make myself a list of what to look for and head back on Friday.

So, this is an antique shop on the Channel Islands? Hope you keep looking, never know what you may find, for coins that is!

If he'll sell the slabbed MS64s for ten bucks........imagine how cheap he'll sell all the raw stuff. Buy it ALL for melt value. You couldn't possibly lose.

Never mind the Morgans. How about those half dimes you mentioned? Bust? Seated? Early?

    That's a whale of a story.

Do you mind giving more details on the antique shop?

P.S. That skull is awesome, do things like that wash up on the beach often?

I hadn't heard of a minke since the last Pink Panther movie I saw. "Do you have a lie-sance for your minke?"

Lol ... actually, since it is an endangered species, the museum is having the National Fisheries department issue me a permit to possess it. Otherwise, as with bald eagle feathers, it would be illegal.

Yes the antique shop is in Santa Barbara.

Take the other's advice. Go back and buy it all. $10 for PCGS MS 64 Morgans! Man, if you can swing a deal on some of the rest like $5 a piece on all the Morgans... It's worth taking a mortgage out at that price, oh and don't take any price guides with you. Just buy it all... If you don't want to buy it all,... tell me where he is and I will. It's a treasure hunters dream.

I bet Google just spiked with searches for antique shops in Santa Barbara. If I start driving now, I can be there by Sunday.

Congrats on the finds! I hope to hear an update after you (or others) make another visit.
