San Marino 1898 5 L.

One of the coins of a full 19th century San Marino type set I recently picked up. I want to delay showing the other coins until I get my photographic merde together-having a lot of problems with proper focus lately.

Mintage on this coin is 18,000

By the way, I picked this up as an AU although I can't find any wear-is it any better?

I can't see any wear either, but the toning could be hiding many sins. Attractive coin, nice photo!

Definitely an attractive coin, Laurent. Congratulations on getting that set.

That's a really nice coin! Was this intended for circulation? It has a medallic feel to it is why I ask.

Really nice overall look to the coin!
I don't see wear from the pics, but there may be just a light touch of true friction (from envelope/cabinet/flip) that is visible under magnification.

Thanks Clankeye.image You have no idea how long it took me to afford this set, bit by slow bit, but if I showed the forum another coin that everyone was familiar with, I was going to spit. I'm going to image the whole set soon, I just want to be able to do a better job of it when I do.

It does have a slightly medallic feel, due no doubt to the reverse- this 5L is about silver dollar size at 25.000g.

These coins were for circulation, although the coinage of San Marino's neighbors is also current (certainly Italy as it completely surrounds San Marino).
The 5 centesimi copper was minted in 1864, 1869, and 1894; the copper 10 centesimi was minted in 1875, 1893, and 1894. The silver 50 centesimi, 1, 2, and 5 lira only in 1898. The smallest mintages were 10,000 for the 2L and 18,000 for the 5L which severely restricts the number of sets available. They were the only coins minted by San Marino during the 19th century.
