Jade Rare Coin --- Live Show Report (with pictures) --- Santa Clara, CA

We are back! As most of you may know, I have not posted in the past couple of months due to some family and health issues, but everything is okay now and we are glad to be back on the PCGS forum.

This is our first time at the Santa Clara show and we are impressed, even though the public has not yet entered. The show organizers have done a great job. Everything is top-notch. Well, there's not too much to report yet, but I thought that I would post a few images from Wednesday's set-up. We are table #833, so please stop by and say hi. The 1,000,000th customer today will receive a bedroom set from Cameron Keifer. We will post an update on floor traffic and business activity later.

  • Jade,

How many tables do you estimate there are at the Santa Clara show?

Is PCGS at this show? I was wondering since they are in Vegas doing an invitational.

From a buyers prospective I thought it was a good show today. Not to crowded, easy to talk with dealers, and some nice material. Glad I made the 5 hour round trip.

Thanks for the report. I expect to be at the show Saturday and will try to stop by Table #833 with a star reverse Large Cent that I'm trying to trace the provenance on as I see you have some interesting Large Cents on your website.

Well at least the "cooler" market improved attitudes somewhat. Even some time to do some horsetrading. Cept for one fella (who shall remain nameless) who sold a couple buck item to a dad with kids and dad paid with a 20 an Mr. Hotshot tole him that if he didn't have change, it was "no sale."

Why bring em if ya don't wanna sell em?

  • Update: So far the show traffic is slooooooow. Very slow as a matter of fact. The lack of retail business gave me the opportunity to speak with several Santa Clara regular dealers to get their opinion. Most are saying that the nice weather is to blame. One guy suggested that tax time has something to do with the low retail sales levels. Dealers are trying to do business with each other to help their show results and it is working to some degree. I spent one hour negotiating a deal with another dealer on some key date early type. If the show were busy, I never would have taken the time to make the deal.

I spent another 2 hours with another dealer from the East Coast to purchase a hoard of Bust Quarters (126 pieces). I am happy to say that we bought the deal, which really made our show. I will post a couple of pics of my favorite newps below. We spent at least 20X more than we sold at this show, which is unusual for us.

Overall, we are pleased with the show and will do it again. It is well organized and the only thing missing this time was more retail customers. Of course our lack of sales could be attributed to the fact that we are stuck in the back of the room with the stamp dealers. I also noticed that this show has more foreign coins/currency and stamps than any other show that I have attended, in terms of ratio.

Forum members, please stop by and say "hi". Haven't met any members at this show!

The nice weather is not to be underestimated. This has been the crappiest winter I can recall here in the Bay Area. Lots of rain, and cold temperatures. I can't wait for summer.

The slow show traffic is probably my fault, too, because I didn't go. I was trying to go yesterday, but I was in meetings all day and never was able to sneak out. Sorry, folks!

Dennis, have you by any chance had time to survey the early gold in SLABS? AMAZING!!!!

When did "rug rubbed" coins start making the grade?

One guy had two side by side both graded identically. NGC. We both laffed at the difference.

  • I'm pleased we met in person! I really enjoyed looking at your proof Columbian commem. It looks proof to me with very square edges, perfect denticles, great strike and so on. Good luck with it!

The show did seem slow, I noticed that when I arrived as I easily got a good parking spot. I didn't stay long as I do have to work on my taxes today. I guess the November show usually has a larger attendance.

I did enjoy meeting up with many of the regulars I often see at this show!

  • Well, the show is over. Back in the hotel now, waiting for the morning flight. Today (Sunday) was a total bust. Absolutely no sales at all. I went to the lobby to check the size of the morning crowd and there was only one guy standing there. We had the opportunity to chat with more of the regular show attendees today and were give a couple more reasons for the very low attendance at this show. I was suprised to hear that the public was charged $8 to enter the show ($4 for children). That was probably the best reason for the low attendance. I already stated the other reasons. Whatever it was, everyone informed me that this was the slowest Santa Clara show they had ever attended. Regardless, we will be back in November. Overall we did okay and do not regret buying a table here.

We stayed until the bitter end today. To kill time and utilize time constructively, we organized inventory, attributed coins, etc. Even bought a few more coins today! By Noon, 75% or more of the dealers had left. Can you imagine paying $8 to enter the show, only to find a veritable ghost town? I guess that staying until the end of the show qualifies us as a wannabe dealer. The "real dealers" usually do a few big deals on the first day, then take their limo to the airport and fly out for the next show. I wonder if the "real dealers" have ever even met a real collector. And....if they did....would they know how to talk to one. Yes, I am talking about Laura. Some of her comments in other threads are starting to piss me off. What a freakin' blow-hard! But I digress.......

Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure:

Here's a pic of northcoin from the PCGS forum. We had a nice talk about his coins, specifically some killer early date gold, including an awesome double struck $5 gold. Wow! That was cool. The coin he is holding in the picture is a 1794 "star reverse" Large Cent. Another cool coin!

  • Isn't funny how you can stand 2 feet from someone and they won't saya word to you. But if they think they can look like a hero, then why not be a fool in public?

Two feet from me? I didn't see you at the show, unless you had a table in the stamp section like us and I didn't notice you. This is the latest comment from you that pissed me off:

There was no need to stay and look at the hilarious wannabes trying to peddle muck from their tables. It was like watching chickens with their heads cut off running around. Many of the established dealers were laughing. The wannabes just don't get it. Again, wannabes are a products of an "up" market. I'm NOT talking about established vest pocket or weekend dealers.

Now that I read it again, I think that you may have just been joking. If so, sorry. Or....maybe I am just overly sensitive because I felt like a chicken with my head cut off at this show!! image

Thanks for the updates. Really appreciated JadeRareCoin's efforts in helping to introduce me to an expert who was able to trace the provenance on the Starred Reverse Large Cent as well as taking the time to offer opinions on the other coins I had brought to the show including the above referenced early date gold double struck 1808 (which was actually the rarer two and a half dollar gold piece). The suggestion that it may well be unique as an early date "error" is intriguing.
  • northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
As a side note on the subject of lack of attendance on the final day, some of the printed materials promoting the show suggested the show would only be open through Saturday. When I mentioned this to one of the dealers he commented that there were errors in the advertised price for admittance as well.
  • northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyone else get misled by the advertising and promotion regarding length of the show?
