The local coin shop owner really upset me today !

I finally had a day off and decided to go up to ther coin shop to poke around and look at his franklin selection. I was looking in his tray and saw one that caught my eye. a '56 very nice probably a 62 or 63. had a $15.00 price on it. I was interested but I forgot my loop at home and wanted a closer look, I asked him to borrow his loop and he said. "Why do you need my loop?" I said to look closer at the coin, I forgot mine. He said " well. theres nothing to see it's a $15.00 coin not a $1,500.00 coin".
Now I have been in this shop many, many times. I just felt like there was something to hide. This is the same shop that had the ICG '64 Lincoln pr70 that I spoke of 2 weeks or so ago. I didn't let him know but I was so upset that I handed him the tray back, said thanks and left.
I am deciding If I will be going back there or not. I called a few places around. 1 shop sells only bullion and proof/mint sets. the other has "private showings by apointment only". nothing else for me around here. I enjoy looking up close dealing, handling (carefully of course) but maybe I am just stuck w/ebay and take my chances there. (that's not any better). 2 pawn shops around and no coins. 1 very shiny cleaned peso coin in a bezel.

I would have calmly told the shop owner why I would never be back in his store.

There is a coin/stamp/antique shop in the downtown area of Chicago that is so famous they have been on TV a few times, are well known, have items from the far, far past for sale probably in the millions. Yet when I've gone in there anyone who waits on me is always very well manored, helpful and courtious even when I mention I only want a coin selling for $1 or $2. I've had them go into their front window for just one cheap coin and felt like I had to say I'm sorry for bothering you only to have them say that's what we are here for. As for your situation I wouldn't waste my time ever going back there to mention anything. I would just continue telling everyone about the idiot at that place. Post the name and address of the dumb place. That should make them feel real good.

  • You did the right thing.. he should can the attitude. Whether it's a $15 purchase or a $1,500 purchase, you would think he'd want a satisfied customer.

On the other hand, maybe he was just having a bad day or was especially busy at the time?

Greeeeaaaat.....more dealer turd out there. I would have taken the advice of the earlier comment, look at him like he's a total idiot and then calmly explain that you'll never ever bother him again for his look....ever!
  • Get your loop and go back.

He probably was just having a bad day.

Man, that really sucks. Especially since your choices of shops is limited. I think you did the right thing by leaving...sending the message you weren't too happy with that response. If there are no other legitimate options for you however, I don't see how punishing yourself by not going back is going to do any good. He certainly won't notice. It's only you that will suffer. I'd remember the loop next time, go back, and see if you can cherry pick a nice variety from him somewhere along the line. I guarantee you'll feel better about picking it from him as opposed to anyone else! Good luck and don't let the guy ruin your enjoyment of the hobby. Work around his bad attitude.

  • No, He wasn't busy only myself and 1 other guy I have spoken to before, was just bsing w/the shop owner. He was joking with the other guy. Anyway that brings up a point, Why am I trying to justify HIS mood. I am the customer. I work In customer service all day long. I work 60 hour weeks sometimes, demanding customers can be very exhausting but IT WAS MY CHOICE TO WORK THERE. therefore I must put up with it. on the other hand I enjoy it and enjoy helping people. I make people feel like they were helped and their problems solved. I follow up w/calls and resolutions and take care of my customers. so I guess my point is. IF HE IS HAVING A BAD DAY THAT'S HIS PROBLEMA.

I don't like dealing with jerks in coin shops- the dealer I visit in Portland always offers me a loupe without being asked regardless of the size of purchase. You can learn to get by on ebay- just learn who the good guys are! image

Tell him what you feel and go back often....but just dont buy anything....ever again.....unless its like 50% of bid price. Also go there and try to sell him your spare wheat pennies, individually...one by one....... as well as junk silver. Or never go back......if it was me, i would go back and bug the snot out of him

How did he handle that pr70 Lincoln you mention? I can't remember how that turned out.

  • Yep, I hear what your saying. It seems some coin shops dealers don't want to be bothered with the public. I don't know why; there their until they close the shop; so they might as well be nice.

I went to a local coin shop a couple years back to buy the Black Book price guide soft cover. Once I located them in the store I noticed that there were rubberbands around each book and a sign that said "do not remove from stand". As I was going to buy the book I did remove the book from the stand and the rubberband to inspect the book. Next thing I heard was a loud coin store owner asking me what the hell I was doing. I said I am going to buy this book and wanted to inspect it before purchase. He then told me to buy it than I could inspect it; So I put the book back and left.

The reason he didn't want anybody to look inside the books, was because many of the pages inside the book were faded and unreadable. What a honorable coin dealer; also his coins were overgraded and overpriced.

I wonder what percentage of coin dealers are A-holes?

It seems to be a disproportional number. It's almost to the point that meeting a considerate coin dealer comes as a surprise.

Go Back. Get your loop and go back and examine the coin and do not say a word. Give him one more chance. Then offer him less than 15 dollars for the coin and tell him he was right.

It is rare indeed to find someone who knows coins and is also friendly and fun
    to deal with.

I totally understand the isolated feeling you can get when just dealing through
ebay. You want to sit and talk about a coin, not just punch in a number.

I find going to the two local shows every month (usually one show a month is all
I can schedule). Allows me to get the interaction I need. There are a few nice
dealers who I've gotten to know and see every month. Even if they don't have
anything for me, I'll still drop by and have a nice long look. There's one guy that even
thanks me for stopping by and looking at his stuff.

The other place where you can get interaction is right here. Lots of good folks here
    with plenty of time image

  • Well, looks like you'll need to move. This is very unfortunate and I would not go back for a few months. Most dealers I've dealt with were extremely nice and helpful except for one who only wanted to rip and go to estate sales. All of his stuff was over priced and that was my first lesson. I did sell some nice coins to him as well and got a double whammy. I think my total lesson for being very stupid cost me around $3500 or more. What a jackasssss I was.

This is a shop you should avoid in the future.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • The pr70 icg '64 Penny, He thinks it's the best thing since peanut butter. I tried to explain the pop report from pcgs but he just dismissed it.
  • Most dealers I've visited have loupes available on the counter. When I go to the big city here (Anchorage) I usually go to Roy's Coins and Roy is always willing to assist - the guy has a ton of stuff and always says to "go on in back and get a Coke if you want." He's rather shrewd when buying but has always been fair and helpful.

Incidentally, both of us are originally from Florida.

Sorry to hear about your interaction with this joker, but I agree to try again when you have your own loupe. If you're hasseled after examining a piece, then tell him how you feel and send him the URL to this posting. Good luck!

I think it's effective enough to just put the coins down and leave, they generally can pick up on the clue.

If you don't mind asking, is it possible for you to tell me which coin store it is? Or where about it is in Florida.

I once had a dealer do that to me when I was 16 years old in 1969 (Donald Brigandi in New York City). I never went back except to just look and never buy.

I did not deserve to give him any of my business in the 36 subsequent years. I never forgot.
