1860 Pattern half dime- grade revealed

Here is an 1860 pattern half dime I purchased raw out of an old collection in January. Sent it to PCGS. Guess the grade (or no grade).

Answer: PCGS MS-63. It is not a proof. It has very strange luster that makes the coin look cleaned, but I think it has not been (and it surely would have been bodybagged, pattern or not). There are a few scattered hairlines, but not an abrasive cleaning.

  • Wow - I love those transitional pieces. It looks like it's been cleaned and re-toned, but hell it's still really neat - congratulations! image

Hmmm, now what country would that be from? Didn't even bother to place that information on the coins back then

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • No grade - cleaned.

Here's a hint- it was not bodybagged.

This piece was definitely cleaned but I had a feeling (past tense do to the above notation that it wasn't bodybagged) that the coin would holder because it's an unusual piece (pattern). That said, the pictures show some marks on the obverse that would make it so the coin should grade no higher than 64 (but the services could be extremely generous being that this coin is extremely rare). Without the coin in hand, it's hard to tell how bad the hairlines are and how abrasive the cleaning was. I'd give an educated guess that this coin graded PF62.

Tough to grade from an image but looks to be in the MS 63-64 range to me. Neat coin. Too bad it wasn't the 1859 transitional.image

I think it has quite a few hairlines and the fields are rather cloudy.

    I guess PR 60 or PR 61

A very nice addition - I would be reluctant myself to buy something like that raw
