Actually these were the best of each roll - The obverses definitely looked like they had been though a counting machine. Still though - they're handsome coins and different - Kudos to the mint on this one I think!

Personally, I dont care for these new nickels, the obverse. just doesn't look right to me.
Perhaps the price is just too steep.

<< <i>I agree Frank and I am happy to see the mint shuffling the deck a little. I just wish they put a little more effort into the animals head---what a lousy head job... the poor animal's mother even thinks her son is ugly >>
Looks like they paid plenty of attention to his ummmmm other parts.
Were these two coins from Mint Rolls or from Bank Wrapped?
FYI... Something I've seen many times on Jeffs is that the D mint looks much better (has fewer dings and better striking)... IMHO

Geez Frank, are you sure that's enough? I thought they got rid of all the nickel slots.
I'll be ordering my one roll set when the Marshall Commem comes out. Gotta combine to cut down that shipping costs when it comes to buying pocket change from the mint.
John - what can I tell ya - Im a sucker for pocket change
<< <i>Wait...these new nickels are just for 2005, right? Or is the Mint planning on keeping them around for a while??? >>
The obverse is likely to stay around indefinitely with a new Monticello for the reverse.

Ahh ok cool, the obverse looks pretty nice to me. But yes, that animal (whatever you want to call it) looks like he was severely beaten with the ugly stick!!!

If I had to nitpick, it'd be with...
1. The ground beneath the buffalo...wish they'd continued the line of it to the coin's edge, so the buffalo wouldn't appear to be floating in space.
2. The reverse font. This Times Roman stuff stinks, and then it's mixed with sans-serif and that lone italic-looking "f".
I wish they'd put a little more effort into making nice font's like those found on early 20th Century designs.
As for the Buffalo's prominent member: funny how obvious it is, once someone's pointed it out. I never noticed it before.
Gee, looks like a mint employee made a deliberate "leaf-like" gouge!

<< <i>I have a handful of these speared bisons, and some other oddities out of my bank roll. Are these things error prone or what? >>
I've been through 5-6 P rolls, and am only finding the scratches and nicks as in the first post, and a lot of strikethroughs. (one roll turned out OK.) No errors to speak of, but some well-placed scratches on the reverse have me dreaming up fun names for ebay titles! (anatomically correct buffalo, peeing buffalo, happy to see ya . . . ) Oh my, I think I've been spending way too much time looking at buffaloes lately . . .

That spear doesn't have anything to do with the indian missing from the obverse does it???
I can't quantify it, but it just seems to me that the old Jeffersons & Buffalos had "substance" - -they looked and felt "heavy" on the features. They were deep & chiseled, as if you could see the time & effort taken by the engravers.
From an aesthetic point of view, today's coins, on the other hand, seem to have less "relief" & a chincy, mass-produced, "devalued" look to them. Take for example the thin outline of Pennsylvania on the state quarters, or the reduced size of Washington on the obverse.
Give me the "heavy", substantial coins like the Morgan & Peace dollars!
Anyone else feel the same way? Like we've given up on quality and substance for cheap & mass-produced? Maybe it was inevitable with the huge numbers of coins which need to be spit out at high speeds these days. Maybe coins are just becomming more of a commodity than an artform to most of the folks at the Mint. Whatever it is, it's a shame.......

P.S. I have noticed for quite some time that the Philly Mint does an overall MUCH lousier job of quality control than the Denver Mint!
Does anyone know kind of error this may be? I have 6 that are identical - the line goes all the way up to the E in States, and halfway down to mound.
Maybe I will put one on eBay and see what happens.
as for the design, it's a simple human failing that all change is seen as bad, if even in a subtle and underlying nature. having viewed the entire realm of drawings at last year's ANA in Pittsburgh, these give us more than likely the best submitted designs. and what's to argue with???? an obverse which gives us proudly displayed contemplation along with wisdom and foresight in a never before shown orientation and font type. a reverse which shows an American icon, a relic from a past which should speak volumes to all about determination, survival, struggle and ultimate victory.

If it is the type of line that grows larger on sucessive coins, it's the beginning of a die break, IMHO...
And for those of you who dont believe PF70DCAMs exist already...
