Typical quality that I found in two rolls of Bison nickels I opened

Actually these were the best of each roll - The obverses definitely looked like they had been though a counting machine. Still though - they're handsome coins and different - Kudos to the mint on this one I think!

I agree Frank and I am happy to see the mint shuffling the deck a little. I just wish they put a little more effort into the animals head---what a lousy head job... the poor animal's mother even thinks her son is ugly

Personally, I dont care for these new nickels, the obverse. just doesn't look right to me. image

  • That is really a nice looking coin. I hope to pick up a few rolls tomorrow!
  • I'd say my P's and D's turned out about the same... I've got at least a roll of D's that have less marks than all the P's.

Very nice. I like the new obverse. Our money needed to make the shift towards a more modern look anyway

Just a question... seeing as how my rolls still haven't shown up...

Were these two coins from Mint Rolls or from Bank Wrapped?

FYI... Something I've seen many times on Jeffs is that the D mint looks much better (has fewer dings and better striking)... IMHO

Geez Frank, are you sure that's enough? I thought they got rid of all the nickel slots.image

The Philly is just awful but the Denver raises hope that there will be some gems.

The obverse is likely to stay around indefinitely with a new Monticello for the reverse.

Ahh ok cool, the obverse looks pretty nice to me. But yes, that animal (whatever you want to call it) looks like he was severely beaten with the ugly stick!!!
  • Nice PicsThumbsUp; the D mint roll I went through from my local bank has the same bag marks on the obverse the reverse is usually much better bag mark wise. Best guess at best grade of the roll I went through is maybe MS_64 at best. I like the Obverse design, the Reverse definitely is a real let down when compared to the old Buffalo design. image Hopefully the next Reverse will be nicer to look at than this rendition of a stud looking for a female.image

  • Overall, an artistic improvement over most designs of late.

If I had to nitpick, it'd be with...
    1. The ground beneath the buffalo...wish they'd continued the line of it to the coin's edge, so the buffalo wouldn't appear to be floating in space.
    2. The reverse font. This Times Roman stuff stinks, and then it's mixed with sans-serif and that lone italic-looking "f".
I wish they'd put a little more effort into making nice font's like those found on early 20th Century designs.

As for the Buffalo's prominent member: funny how obvious it is, once someone's pointed it out. I never noticed it before.
Gee, looks like a mint employee made a deliberate "leaf-like" gouge! image

Alright... seeing as how PCGS hasn't updated the Pop Reports yet, and I know there's at least one PF70DCAM Buffalo and an Ocean(hum... Wondercoin... calling Wondercoin), soooo who's got a MS67 coin yet?

I've been through 5-6 P rolls, and am only finding the scratches and nicks as in the first post, and a lot of strikethroughs. (one roll turned out OK.) No errors to speak of, but some well-placed scratches on the reverse have me dreaming up fun names for ebay titles! (anatomically correct buffalo, peeing buffalo, happy to see ya . . . ) Oh my, I think I've been spending way too much time looking at buffaloes lately . . .

  • Nice picture Neptune. That poor buffalo looks like he has a spear in his side. What are you using for a camera?

That spear doesn't have anything to do with the indian missing from the obverse does it???
  • That's the first real pics I have seen of the obverse. Looks like a coin that can either be perfect or show every imperfection.

For all the nice things people have been saying about the new nickels, I can't help but feel like the overall quality of coins in general (both the new Buffalo's and many of the state quarters) has fallen over the years.

I can't quantify it, but it just seems to me that the old Jeffersons & Buffalos had "substance" - -they looked and felt "heavy" on the features. They were deep & chiseled, as if you could see the time & effort taken by the engravers.

From an aesthetic point of view, today's coins, on the other hand, seem to have less "relief" & a chincy, mass-produced, "devalued" look to them. Take for example the thin outline of Pennsylvania on the state quarters, or the reduced size of Washington on the obverse.

Give me the "heavy", substantial coins like the Morgan & Peace dollars!

Anyone else feel the same way? Like we've given up on quality and substance for cheap & mass-produced? Maybe it was inevitable with the huge numbers of coins which need to be spit out at high speeds these days. Maybe coins are just becomming more of a commodity than an artform to most of the folks at the Mint. Whatever it is, it's a shame.......

P.S. I have noticed for quite some time that the Philly Mint does an overall MUCH lousier job of quality control than the Denver Mint!

  • rb - to answer your question - I used my 'old' (purchased in 99) Sony Mavica - MVC-FD73. I was surprised it took such a good pic - sometime I have problems catching things up close. Not sure where that Indian went.

Does anyone know kind of error this may be? I have 6 that are identical - the line goes all the way up to the E in States, and halfway down to mound.

Maybe I will put one on eBay and see what happens.

judging the quality of a 200,000,000+++ mintage from each Mint based on the random search of 40 coins from each Mint hardly seems reasonable. add to that the simple fact that we may not even be seeing the "best quality coins" from each roll, only Frank's personal best quality representation and then his pictures. is it too much to wait for more coins to be seen before we condemn the poor quality of the entire mintage?? unless, of course, one bad apple does spoil the whole bunch.........................

as for the design, it's a simple human failing that all change is seen as bad, if even in a subtle and underlying nature. having viewed the entire realm of drawings at last year's ANA in Pittsburgh, these give us more than likely the best submitted designs. and what's to argue with???? an obverse which gives us proudly displayed contemplation along with wisdom and foresight in a never before shown orientation and font type. a reverse which shows an American icon, a relic from a past which should speak volumes to all about determination, survival, struggle and ultimate victory.

If it is the type of line that grows larger on sucessive coins, it's the beginning of a die break, IMHO...

And for those of you who dont believe PF70DCAMs exist already...

Got mine last thursday, it was a high point because I had been waiting and waiting. Since I'm the coin guy at work, everybody was coming around and showing me the articles about the nickel and emailing me stuff about the new nickel and then the first 4 sets arrived of the 8 that I ordered. A very nice coin, I posted on this earlier, I do like it. So, I broke open a p and a d roll and dug around in them a bit. No errors but then I decided to hand out single raw coins to some of the folks at work. Man, they sure got a kick out of a nickel (even if it cost 10 cents). Heck of a lot of fun on a friday morning for 4 buks, that's cheaper than a box of doughnuts. I'm going to give the rest of the p roll away on Monday.

Haven't seen one in change or at the banks yet. Sure a lot better than the old ones. One thing that I would like to know is who decided on the Bison being a male. Will some group eventually protest this coin as being sexist and insist on some of the Bisons being female?

Guess I'm in the minority because I really like the coin. I like how the mint put some detail into the buffalo. Some may think it looks ugly, but real buffaloes are ugly (and the bulls do have prominent genitals and gonads). I agree that it would look better if the ground the buffalo is standing one went from rim to rim. It does kind of look like he is floating in air. Overall I think it is a vast improvement over anything the mint has produced for circulation coinage since the forties.
