Whadda ya think bout this Morgan - Grade and Comments Posted

Whadda ya think? edited to add: the dark marks on the cheek are not hits, they are highly mirrored areas that absorb the light. I'm really interested if you think this is PL.

edited: oops, you'd think after all these years I would have figured this image thing out. Actually my server is having problems so I had to do this using the CU server and screwed it up.image

Alright guys, I suspect you are misreading the image. The dark marks on the cheek are not hits, they are highly mirrored areas that absorb the light. The check is nearly mark free.

This is in a second generation PCGS holder. I don't know if they used the PL designation back then so I'm really interested if you think this is PL.

MS64. Don't know if it's PL or not.

Only you can really tell, but from the photos it looks PL to me. Also I find that I cannot tell MS64 from MS66 based on photos.

  • My guess 65pl because most of the marks are due to clashing. Nice coin, enjoy it.

also go here and print out the page to test the degree of PL.

The coin was struck with clashed dies. It does not add to the value any but its good to be able to tell what those "extra" marks are on the coin.

    1. There is a diagonal mark coming out from where the chin line intersects with the neck line.
    2. There is "sideways V" to the right of the eagle's left wing, near the top of the wreath.
3 There is vertial line coming from the top of the eagle's right wing pointing to the "n" in "In God We Trust"

All of these are clashed die marks.

Over the past several weeks I have been imaging my entire collection. In doing so I brought my old incomplete Morgan set home that I started in 1996 and pretty much put to rest in early 2000. Although bored with them at the time, as I was imaging them I now remember how beautiful they really are. Although my taste in coins has somewhat evolved since that time, I found the old set to be quite refreshing. Even some of the bright white Morgans like this that has more than likely seen some dip during its lifetime.

According to my records I bought this Morgan sometime in the fall of 1998. At the time my collection remained quite small so I wasn't big on notes. Apparently at the time I believed I would remember all the details. As "old timers" has kicked in I have become much more reliant on detailed notes for all the coins I purchase. I am somewhat saddened that I don't know where, or who I bought it from.

I chose this one to post because it is quite flashy, what I believe to be PL by todays standards, and struck with clashed dies. It is one of those coins that when displayed with others beams like a headlight. As such, it is very difficult to get an image with all the reflectivity of coin while slabbed. Although the consensus appears to be MS64, with the coin in hand I am comfortable with grade on the slab. From what I have seen to date, I believe it would be awarded the PL designation as well.

Who knows, just maybe someday I will finish this set. I have a fewer than 20 to go.

Oh, good eye on the catching the clashed dies guys.
