Thanks for gathering the info. Interesting considering all the people looking for them.

Numismatic News just had an article on what one person's opinion on overall population of these die gouge varieties. I think he estimated about 15,000 or so exist. There's a lot of money to made on good ol' die gouges!

I think they are all on ebay right now too. Already had to add -WISCONSIN to all of my error searches

I got an email yesterday from a very well known variety expert who I had offered my raw up and down specimens for examination. He replied that he was satisfied by reports from others, one of whom has opined repeatedly on the forum that they are undoubtably gouges, and then, although he has not examined them himself, said this: "They are die gouges." Direct quote.

Edited to make clear that he was declining my offer to send them.

Thanks for the POP update. Since I have been posting updated info on these I'll continue...

I see that there has been some lackluster sales on ebay last week while I was away at Long Beach. I've been able to buy some sets for $250-$300. I bought about 75 sets from Royalty Coins from San Antoinio for $350 per set at the show. They said I bought all the sets they knew about in San Antonio. I didn't think I was going to be buying in the secondary market, but I've been getting too many orders for sets with only a trickel of offers to sell. Of course, now, I again, have enough - I won't and can't buy them all. I am taking these to Baltimore to either offer to dealers or slab them. I've had a few dealers buy quantities at over $450, so I feel there is a growing buy/sell spread taking hold.

I posted my thoughts regarding Ken Potter's lack of professionalism on my web site. I don't hold a grudge against him - just think he was in no position to determine a value (or lack of) for these varieties.

In buying more, I still don't intend to operate a buy/sell market on these by myself, I just felt that, given the numbers found, they were cheap. Remember these are two sperarate varieties that add up to an amount. not a single variety at that amount. I feel the average BU high leaf should eventually be $500 and the average BU low leaf should be $250.

Also, in posting these comments, please don't assume I'm trying to prop up a market for my own reward. My intention is to give you people some information you can use if you like to possibly profit from on you own.

I feel that no one has yet determined exactly what caused these varieties. I do know that they are now a permanent addition to the state quarter series and the more the cause is discussed, the more these will be desired by collectors. The mystery enhances the desirability.
