Ughhh! Too many coins, not enough money!

ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,781 ✭✭✭✭

Don't you hate it when all of a sudden multiple coins that you've been looking years for show up at the same time?

What do you do when you can only offord one of them?

    1. Buy only one.

    or

    2. Sell some of your collection to buy more.

The house is my best investment so a second mortgage isn't going to happen.

I have three kids, but only two cars, so hocking one of the rides isn't happening.

That's why you have learn to specialize.

I don't collect it all and don't have the interest to collect it all. AND as a dealer, I get to handle a lot of interesting stuff that I would not want to own over the long haul. That's one of the advantages to buying and selling.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    BillJones,

But that's exactly the point that I'm making. I DO specialize.

Look around your house for some eBay "treasures" to sell. It's a nice way to get rid of stuff you don't care about anymore and cash in at the same time.

Then you can buy those coins.

My problem is that I've already done this. I need to find more stuff to sell.

OK, hocking one of the rides is out. What about hocking one of the kids? image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Actually, I think the last attempt to sell a kidney on eBay had bidding up to something like $2,000,000. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats kind of high i'm pretty sure kidneys really go for thousands usually in the 5000-15000 dollar range.

  • Sign up for a credit card that offers 0 interest for a year. Charge the coins on this credit card, and if your credit card offers you free interest for one full year, pay 1/12th the balance each month for 12 months. If you have good discipline, and can afford the "monthly payments," you'll have paid for the coins over the course of a year interest free. Just make sure you pay off the entire balance by the end of the introductory 0% interest period, or else that credit card debt will be super costly.

This is a way to finance some of those larger purchases that you might not otherwise afford.... but it requires a lot of financial discipline.

    Tsimmerdown,

Acutally, I'm very financially disciplined and have never carried a balance on any of my credit cards. If I can't pay for an item by the end of the month, I don't buy it. Thus this thread.

However, you're idea is a great one. It's like getting an interest free loan (albeit with severe penalties).
