2005 Nickels selling for $16.00 a set on ebay already

I've seen auctions for the new nickels going for as much as $16.00 a set on ebay. What will the high point for these be? Considering I got them from the min for $8.95 a set and I believe you can still buy them for that.

  • This I just dont understand. Perhaps not as many people are aware of US Mint than I thought. I wonder how much they will sell for when they are sold out?

Maybe these folks are thinking that they're gonna get their coins in a couple of days not realizing that its a pre-shipment auction? I dunno image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

They should look before they buy. I got a few rolls yesterday in DC, and the quality of the coins are just average. The high relief on the obverse portrait attracts hits and scuffs like honey attracts flies. I predict it will be very hard to find gems of this coin.

So, this MS68 I'm holding will be worth tens of thousands!!! Cool! image
  • If the bank rolls are trash...then won't people be looking at more of the overpriced mint rolls for the true gems?

    Some people will.

  • I only see that they are going for 11.95 - unless Seller provides free ship. That's only a $3 markup for those people w/bad credit who don't have credit cards, or prefer to use eBay vs. hassling with mint problems, back ordered product, etc.

Is this an item that the mint will sell out of (limited quantity), or will they continue to be sold throughout the year? I figured with rolls the second would be true.

They have another nickel coming out this year, just like last year. They are calling it "ocean in view". Last year the peace nickels were only available for 6 months, then the keelboat nickels came out. I think these will be similar, the ocean view nickels will come out in August.

  • I don't know how the mints actually schedule various coins, but they sure have lots of coins to make, and I suspect that they have made all the Bison nickels they are going to make. Anyone have any idea what their policy is?

They'll make these to fulfill demand until the end of June then they'll mint the new nickel.

In normal years they'd just mint according to their forcasting formula but with these spec-
ial coins there will likely be a minimum number they'd produce to meet expected continuing
    demand for these specific coins.

  • Are the nickels that go into rolls minted at a different time than those put into bags? Is there actually more care put into the coins that go into the Mint Roll Sets?
  • I don't know anything about the U.S. Mint, but are the rolls that everyone is buying the same ones that the banks will be getting? I'm sure the banks are already plagued with people asking to reserve some, so it's just a question.

Just tried to order some of the rolls at the mint site and the site said they are already back ordered. I got a couple of the mint bags, and those are ready to go.

  • I just want to get in on the thread.

My order, as others was posted as "backordered" after 2:00 pm, except for the "D" bags.

I want to just add my comment to several replys. No specific replys.

Actually, I did not realize that one could order from the mint until I was reading all this information on the boards 2 years ago!!!

Most of these sellers of mint issues aren't any more informed, but are trying to make a quick buck and will get burnt when the mint doesn't deliver.

Yes, previous threads indicate that the mint does give more attention to mint sets.

Bags and rolls are the same thing. Roll coins can be worse than bags. My MS66FS 2003-D came from a roll. I don't see better roll coins in general (nickels).

I've seen better coins from the bag-vs-roll with other issues. The mint sends coins to the Federal Reserve banks in bags. They get rolled afterwards. (Sometimes they get buried in backyards). Just a reference.

The U.S. MINT doesn't hit your account until they ship. There is a fixed shipping fee for your order even if it's sent in split shipments.

The U.S. Mint has a schedule of release dates.

"Some 97 million of the five-cent coins are being shipped this week from the Federal Reserve's 12 regional banks to local banks around the country. They should start showing up in store cash registers within the next two weeks"
