I think that's only because of the harsh lighting in the photo. If you're talking about modern gold pieces in general, I think the old and the new both look great. Best thing about gold is the way it ages -- it's highly unlikely any gold coin is going to be lost to carbon spots, aggresive tarnish blackening the coin, etc.
Plus, gold is a heaven-sent metal when compared to the bogus AT and dipping games played with silver coinage. (But gold does have its own unique problems, especially counterfeiting and polishing.)
either way, spiffy coins, arguably the "prettiest" obv. of any gold piece around.
