Which is worse, dipping a coin with nice toning or having that same coin upgraded after being dipped

  • After looks better to me. I know thats the wrong answer but I like the ANR coin more. Maybe because the photo is so much better.

I don't think the coin should be in a 65 slab before or after being cleaned. But in my opinion, the coin looked far better with a touch of gold toning than it does now.

I wonder how many orginal coins are lost every year due to "improvements" Add to that the number lost every year due to floods and fires and its no wonder why original coins are worth a premium.

Here's a vote for the original ... what a sin to wipe out original/nice toning. I have a PR-68 1951 Jeff that is shot DCAM if dipped, but I refuse to do so because the rainbow toning, which hides the contrast, is so beautiful.

i like the toner better....................the other one looks kinda flat to me.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
  • I agree that original coins are more beautiful and should not be dipped.
I believe certain TPGs understand this (ANACS) and some prefer to base
their opinions strictly on the market demand for white coins (PCGS). I have
several coins in ANACS holders that I would like to cross to PCGS, but to
do so I would have to make them white.

I'm not sure if they are the same coin. On the reverse of the ANR coin, there is a mark near the rim at 5 o'clock, but it is not visible on the Heritage coin.

I much prefer the original coin. ANR's pic isn't very good either.

I believe them to be the same coin. (Look at the butt area - tone mark).

I will be the one to say it....I think the coin IS a 65...undergraded the first time.

I take it back. I now think it is the same coin.

While I don't see the similar toning near the butt, I do see an identical spot beneath the "TA" in "STATES".

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we all get to spend our money the way we see fit, and there are no Coin Originality Laws or Cops.

If you like toned coins and want to buy them, then great!
If you like white coins and want to buy them, then great!

Disagreeing with someone else's tastes in coins, cars, art or whatever is free speech, but one person or group trying to impose their set of collecting values on another is wrong.
    When in doubt, don't.

True but I don't think thats going on here. Hope its not percieved that way.

No, not at all. Just wanted to post a reminder that many people are really passionate about what they collect and why, and it's important to keep in mind that other folks can feel equally passionate about what they collect, even if there are those who would consider it garbage.

True and I agree, but dipping a coin is a one way street, you can't undip a coin once its done. That just makes the search a little harder and a little more fun IMHO.

Yes, that's my point. I hate that the coin was dipped to begin with, but then PCGS rewards the submitter by grading the coin MS65. It only encourages more dipping.

And by the way, it is most certainly the same coin. The thing that immediately gave it away when I saw it in the ANR auction were the three hits that can be seen dead center of the obverse. They each cross one another.

When the coin showed up in the Heritage auction last July, I thought long and hard about bidding on it. However, those three hits made back out at the last minute.

In my opinion, the coin was a high end 64 before it was cleaned, but now...

Not interested. That coin IMO has far too many contact marks in grade sensitive areas on the obverse to be in a 5 holder. I don't care what they did with it.

  • It was probably a low 65 whether the idiot dipped it or not. Only now it looks like the buffalo is taking a brown poop!!image
