type coin pic o' the week 2/10/05: 20 cent piece

the real odd-ball denomination. A textbook fine I think, but more important, a nice original piece. Bought on ebay a couple of years ago. What do you think of this one folks?

  • I like it. It has nice color and honest wear. It isn't very banged up. It's a keeper image

A nice, original coin in Fine condition...

The grading on 20 cent pieces is different because the word "LIBERTY" is raised about the shield, not incuse as it is on the rest of the liberty seated coinage. Because that alternate positioning the word wears off more quickly than it does on any other liberty seated coin.

There are also a number of 1875-CC double dimes that were weakly struck in the area of "liberty" and the corresponding area of the eagle’s left wing on the obverse. From what I’ve seen perhaps half of the 1875-CC coins have this mint caused defect.

I love this li'l ol' series. I recently completed the set of 4 (anyone with some extra change so I can get the 76CC?) in VF-XF+. I was fortunate enough to find a dealer who hadn't sold off his 75CC(VF) and 76(XF, lightly cleaned/wiped) to another dealer early into a 3-day coin show. These puppies are tough to find in decent, original condition on the bourse floor. I don't mind having duplicates (I have 3 75S's) of the non-S minted coins but I simply can't find nice (mid-to-lightly circulated) ones for sale from any dealers I visit.
  • I've always loved this series - I have 3 of the 4, haven't been able to find a nice 75-P for my collection. Here's a well circulated 75-CC I got many years ago:

Here is the one from my type set. It's an 1875-S in a green label PCGS MS-63 holder. It's been dipped, but that's the only fault I can find with it. It's a slam dunk "PQ" IMO. I bought it during one the first buying trips I made when I started my business.
