Is it just me or....

Does this coin look like it has a bit of "rub" (okay, let's just say it...."wear") on it (cheek, eagle's breast, light amount on left wing, etc.)? Is it just the pictures? $32000!!!!! Does anyone have some spare change they can send over here?

    DOH! It's there now.
  • I don't know about wear, but it sure does have some nice "rainbow" toning.

Yeah...I guess those slightly darkened areas aren't wear...just pretty shades of gray. image

    Anyone else wanna comment?
  • A coin like this you would have to see it in person to really tell.

Totally understood and that's my general feeling on just about any (supposed) BU coins. However, there were two reasons why I'm bringing this to attention.

One, I've heard from a number of people (esp. dealers) that it's not uncommon to see older coins in MS slab even though they might exhibit a tiny bit of "rub" ("cabinet friction", whatever your flavor of the day is). It appears that graders tend to be a bit more forgiving on the high value stuff which seems to make no sense at all.

Two, after seeing a bunch of coins over the past month go up for grading opinions on this forum, most of you are pretty brutal on a potential MS coin if it exhibits anything even resembling "rub" (AU58 or worse).

This coin is a high-value coin that is likely going to be sold by it's picture (and pedigree), so I would think that most will not have a chance to see it in person but have to rely on the slab (which flies in the face of the ol' saying "Buy the Coin, Not the Slab").

Those are Morgans and coins dated after 1832. A 1794 half dime is graded differently then a 1881-S Morgan. They were struck under different conditions and can't really be compared to one another.

Weak strike maybe, but not wear.

  • i think on the eagle there is minor wear even though i dont think the rest of the coin has any wear. jmo
