Is there a reason why people take proof coins out of the original mint packaging...

...and put them in a dansco holder? Like with state quarters. Wouldn't the mint plastic case protect the coins more than the dansco or is the dansco better?

It's all about the display. It might be a pain to keep all of the original, plastic holders and easier to show them off in a nice album.

I know that with some of the mint packaging from prior years, the coins can be adversely affected by the materials they used, and an album (or slabbing) provides better storage....

I agree! It gives you a sense of accomplishment that slabs can't even do. My favorite is my Dansco Euro 2002 collecion. Such a nice set, and cheap right now too.

Although some Proof coins have been ruined by mint packaging, FAR MORE Proof coins have been ruined once they have been taken out of their holders and placed in an album or other storage device. Unless you are going to get your Proof coins slabbed, you are far better off if you leave them in their mint package. The coins on average are better preserved, and the market for "run-of-the-mill" Proof coins is for pieces in their mint package. Only the exceptional ultra Cameo peices are worth a premium out of their mint holder. The others are tough sellers.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
