Sent this coin to PCGS, burned a freebie 4 day voucher.
Grade came in today, 1 21890193 1971-S 1C USA PR69CA
If that's just a CAM, I wanna see a DCAM!!!

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Marty ... PCGS, as I am sure you know, will not be satisfied until every deserving modern coin has been submitted and then submitted for regrade a few times ... image They are tighter than Hades on deserving coins ... almost makes you wish they were in a different holder/insert these days so you could identify this period a few years down the road... Nice coin, by the way. Did those few "shiny" spots on high points get ya?

Ouch is right. If it wasn't Modern Crap I would suggest a Presidential Review.image

Probably due to the purple background...I heard that their graders HATE the color purple!

Could PCGS down graded it to CAM because of the frost breaks on Abes shoulder and cheek?
  • I love to buy a 69 Cam like that for a 69 Cam price. Anytime you can get a coin that should be DCAM but is labeled Cam is a good deal in my opinion. The only time it is a bad deal is if you really need DCAM on the label for your Registry set...

That was exactly my thought, too. I can't see any other possible justification.

IMO, too many frost breaks (unless you can wipe the mirrors 'whistle-clean').....is that haze around the obv. and rev. rims? If it is, it will probably buff off with a trusty EAC-style brush. image

The DCAM's are being returned in PR68 holders

Those "frost breaks" may just be Marty's photography?
I don't think Marty would have wasted that submission, had it not been super frosty! As irritating as a 69CAM grade is, for the 71, it's still good...
  • This came back DCAM. Sorry for the lousy photos.

PCGS tough? That's an ANACS 67 Cam. image

I've been told that PCGS looks to the frosting between the columns for a full blown DCAM. Is there a frost break between the left, last two columns on the reverse?

Ouch is right, sure looks DCAM.

Best reason I can think of.
  • I've submitted enough 1971 Lincoln proofs to suspect that it's the haze near the obverse and reverse rims. I've got about 75 CAMs and 35 DCAMs for reference.

  • I have just received a submission back from PCGS ( I was expecting one or two upgrades ) and all have been listed on eBay!!!

Where you happy with the grades? Why are you selling them all?

I would suspect if you submitted that coin ten times, you would get five 68DCAMs and five 69CAMs. PCGS is funny about giving the extra point but knocking down the designation on tweener coins like yours. Call it a 68-1/2DCAM when you sell it. image
