  • I saw an auction on eBay the other night that had a proof set with two nickels and no dimes in it. Or visa versa, I forgot which.

It's not extremely unusual for a coin to be missing from a mint set and it was especially
common in the early '70's. It's usually a smaller coin like the cent or dime though. You
can find various packaging errors such as Denver coins in Philly packages and the like.
There is a report of a '70 mint set containing three small date cents; two in the S slot and
one where the Philly cent should be.

One of the most ironic and common errors is the 1980 mint set with an extra Denver
quarter where the San Francisco SBA belongs.

There is little demand for such sets at the current time but this could change. It might
not be impossible to counterfeit the sets so some discretion should be exercised before
paying substantial premiums for error sets.

  • thank for the good info.
