interesting Experiment: One Month To Purchase Complete Mini Set of Cameo Kennedys

Just for fun, I gave myself a few weeks to locate and purchase a mini-set of Kennedys- ranging in dates from 1964 to 1967 in Proof and SMS. I limited myself to these coins:
1964 Proof. 1964 Proof AH. 1965 SMS. 1966 SMS, and the 1967 SMS. At a minimum I needed each to be CAMEO although I preferred DCAM.

The clock started the first of January and ended a few days ago.
I searched only eBay, spending a few minutes each day, usually in the morning and then again later in the evening.
My limited search turned up the following:
NGC PR68 CAMEO AH

COST: a little less than $50.00
Here's the eBay Auction

NGC PR69 CAMEO 1964

COST: about $100.00

1965 SMS 64 CAMEO
image
COST: about $45.00
Here's the eBay Auction Seller is a board member here. I disliked settling on a low grade, but for the CAMEO, the price seemed about right.

1966 SMS 67 CAMEO

COST: $80.00

1967 SMS 66 UltraCameo

COST: $150.00
Here's the eBay Auction

Just for fun, while I was looking, I picked up this: NGC PR67 UltraCameo 1964 Seemed like a good deal for under $50.00.

So, for less than $500.00 I was able in a period of about five weeks or so, pick up the Kennedy Short Set (plus the bonus 1964 Kennedy in PR67 UltraCam) in respectable grades, all with at least a CAMEO. It was a fun project and the coins make for a pleasant display.

  • Nice short set with good Cameo's. Were you only looking for NGC ones?

Interesting $425 project (if my math is correct). Why NGC only? Would it have made a difference in time and/or money if you went PCGS?

I personally like the way these Cameo silver Kennedys look in NGC plastic vs PCGS slabs.
I also wanted the set to match. I did, during this time, pick up PCGS Cameo and DCAM Kennedys from 1968; 1969, and 1970.

Pat, I really like the look of the 65. Not a bad batch. I'm about 4 years into the search for THE 65. I've made a 66 in MS68 Dcam, a 67 in 67 Dcam, and several 65's in MS68 Cam, but I haven't found the 65 holy grail. I'm still looking.

Thanks Don. For the longest time I was under the false impression finding SMS's and the 1964s in CAMEO and Deep Cameo was difficult, but it really isn't.
Here's another I just picked up:
    NGC Cameo 1966 SMS. Cheap!

You're right. They aren't difficult to find. Most Kennedy collectors are set builders, and it's incredibly easy to find most of the collection in very high grade with great contrast. When they get around to the SMS coins, they're stumped. It's awfully tough to find some of the coins with enough contrast to match their collection. The 65 is the toughest, and finding one with great mirrors and white devices is almost impossible. That, coupled with poor production values and inadequate handling, and they become a challenge. The 65 in MS68 Dcam has proven very illusive to a host of avid searchers for many years now. PCGS has never seen one. It would be a fun coin to own.

I've got to believe that if a 1965 SMS in 68 DCAM was graded by PCGS it would be the first $10,000.00+ Kennedy (outside of the SMS1964's, of course).

Amazing to think that's not a PROOF!

I have to believe that's one of the first half dozen coins struck off a new die, no doubt.

  • Nice set

Just to address the price thing.

My dog of dog's 57 proof set that wouldnt cross at PCGS one grade lower cost me about 925.00

    Same set,same grade,the PCGS price guide,suggests a retail value of 5000.00
