Surprising even myself, I am now a 'lifer'.

Took the plunge Friday and became an ANA Life Member.

I figure its got to be worth it, right? Doesn't it? Hmm?

  • It is well worth it. You will get Numismatist for the rest of your life!

I was an ANA member in 79,80 & 81 and let my membership expire. Wished I'd kept it.

Anyway, a few months ago I got to thinking if I rejoined, could I get my old membership # back. So I called the 800 number and talked to a lady in membership. She says, sure you can get your old number back by rejoining, but you need to pay 1982 to 2004 membership dues. image

I don't think I need that old number that bad. image

  • I'd agree on the condition that they send you the 22 years of back issues of the Numismatist. Of course it would almost be cheaper just to pay for the life membership and get the new life number.

I'd have taken that step if I ever had the extra dough to cough up.

    Is it worth it??

Monetarily, who knows ... I think the cost is the same as about 25 years of dues ... so in that respect it could be, depending on your life expectancy.

I don't think that is what you meant though.

It's good for the hobby (IMO) and it's good for your position in the hobby (again IMO), so ... yes, I think it's probably worth it. I've read enough of your posts to know you are serious about this hobby, so in that respect it should suit you well.

On a side note, for me personally, I think it would be worth it ... and I may follow suit this year when my three year gig comes due.

    Congratulations again! image

What kind of damage are we talking about here?

    Is this:

Type of membership (select one): _____ Regular $39 (US - 1 year)
    _____ Regular $49 (Foreign - US funds - 1 year)
    _____ Junior $15 17 years or younger (US - 1 year)
    _____ Senior $35 (US - Age 65 or older - 1 year)
    _____ Regular $90 (US - 3 year)
    _____ Regular $150 (US - 5 year)
    _____ Life $750

    Accurate?

Lets see, Monthly coin budget... $50 dollars...

Amount of times that 50 goes into 750... 15 times...

    15 months into years...1.3

I'll have to pass at this time image

What are the benifits of being an ANA member?

23 years X 39 dollars = $897.00 Thats if the annual dues have been $39 dollars all these years.

Current Life time membership is $750 dollars for a difference of: $147.00 So the question to ask yourself is, is your old number worth 147 Dolalrs to have?

Look at it this way, if the number is still available...It will always be yours, weather you use it or not.

On second view... if they allow you to sign up for the 5 year plan for 150 dolalrs then it would look like this:

    23 years / 5 (Amount of years= 4.6

    4.6 times the 150 dollar 5 year fee = $690

Current life time membership is $750 for a savings of 60 dollars...see if they will go for that.

  • Wish I had the bucks to spare to do that. I just took the 3 year for now...

  • For a male age 40, non-smoker, it's roughly a break-even proposition, assuming your money earns 6%. Obviously a better deal when younger, when you have less money to spend. Bad deal for heavy drinker and smoker over 50!

Of course this ignores the intangible benefits, if any, of being an ANA Life Member! image
