I saw this coin while I was attending FUN, and always wanted to own one. I have been migrating back into earlier key-dates anyway, so I thought it would be fun to own it.

My dealer just bought a near complete run of Large Cents. First time I had ever seen the 1799 and 1804. Early copper is a lot of fun with all of the different die varieties.

Congratulations - that looks like a very attractive original example of the 1799 date -

Most of them are ugly, dark, porous, cleaned, whizzed or otherwise depressed.

For those of you who don't know the series, not only is the 1799 rare in terms of number, but the planchets of most existing examples are usually extremely rough and corroded. In that era, the mint was having major trouble with their copper supplies. They were actually purchasing sheets of copper from the roofs of old houses and plating from the sides of old warships to augment their meager copper supplies, leading to major impurities in the resultant planchets, which then were either very rough to start with, or corroded rapidly after minting. Their best planchet stock came from English supppliers, but in 1799, there was little of this stock available. This coin looks like it was stamped out of the English rolled copper stock. It's spectacular!! Congratulations...
