Why do we partake in this charade??

I feel more and more everyday like my coins own ME, not the other way around. They will outlive me by hundreds if not thousands of years.

I am considering renaming my set "Saints That JB Is Babysitting" .image

We do NOT "own" these coins...we lease them.image

  • That's why coins are sooo neat! you buy them and they last forever, I go to Wall-mart and spend a hundred bucks and there is nothing there the next week, I spend that much on a coin and enjoy it for life. What a bargain!

    JB,

Up the Prozac and send some my way, too. image

I have heard others similarly state that they are custodians for the coins in their collections. It is a significant responsibilty to keep them safe and secure and out of the hands of those who might diminish their originality for short term gain.

You're absolutely right, and that it why it is incumbent on collectors to take the best care of their coins as possible. We are only their temporary caretakers; the coins themselves belong to the world.

Time flies. Nothing remains. Every year 1% of everything is destroyed and eventually
fate catches up with each of us and all the things we treasure. Part of collecting is try-
ing to defy these odds; to deliver something to the future to remind people of the past.
One of the reasons collectors seek the finest is to present our age and the past in the
best possible light. It is the belief that not only are our old coins so fine but that they
were properly cared for such a very long time by a succession of those who cared.

Advanced collectors have realized this for years. We are only custodians and preservationists. These coins with proper care will be around long after we are dust. The interesting part is that eyes and hands that are now dust once looked upon and handled these coins. And these coins existed and could have even influenced the events that we study from history.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • That's why I'm in the process of organizing my collection of certified coins so that when I die or in case of emergency, I my collection would have liquidity.

BTW there must be a loan on that coffin.

When I go to be with the Lord, I'd want the cheapest funeral possible. I'm talking Hefty or Glad. Spend the 2-3 grand+ on the living. image

When we sleep at night the coins laugh and talk to each other about all the collectors they've known and how some of us thought we owned them. As they say in Kentucky, "what a hoot!" image

I think you have a choice with coins... you can either babysit them and they can last forever... or melt them and they wont.

I keep telling mine that sooner or later, when they pi$$ me off, they'll be a lump of nickel at the bottom of the lake. They tend to not bother me anymore.image
