Question on DNC grading

I have a gorgeous 1880-S Morgan with really deep mirrors on the obverse, and slight mirrors on the reverse. ANACS graded it a MS-64 Obv DMPL. I feel it's between a 64 and 65, and was hoping the mirrors on the front could squeeze it into a DMPL at PCGS, even though the reverse is only PL. I think I put a min grade of 64PL (maybe 64DMPL) and got a DNC. Will they include any note or info on why it didn't cross, or what grade they thought it was? This was my first crossover attempt, maybe I should have cracked it out first so they wouldn't see that ANACS only graded the Obv DMPL.

The graders don't see the grades on the labels. If ANACS gave it Obv. DMPL more then likely it won't ever be a PCGS DMPL because of the reverse.

    Cameron:

Yes, the graders do see the labels on crossover coins. That's a change PCGS made last year.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I did not know that. Thanks for the info.

    No they will not...
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Yes, they do. It says "better luck next time, sucker!"

PCGS requires both sides be DMPL to get into a DMPL holder. One sided are just graded MS.

That's an exaggeration. They only include an order form for a resubmission.

I'd always assumed the whole "both sides need to be DMPL" grading approach too, but a few dealers mentioned that PCGS is not as strick on this as ANACS. They said that since ANACS can grade the Obverse and Reverse independently, they are usually a little tighter on the overall grade. Were these dealers just feeding me a line? I guess so, since I tried it out and it didn't work.

By the way, I get about a 14" reflection on the Obv and a 6" reflection on the Rev. That's about where I can't read text in the reflection of the mirrors anymore.

PCGS has a new customer service program called the "Frequent Crosser Program"

You just give them your credit card number and tell them the number of times you want to try crossing the coin at a minimum grade, and each time it comes back DNC, they automatically run it through again until it finally crosses or you run out of money.

If you insist and go through proper channels, they will tell you why your coin didn't cross (or upgrade, for that matter). Carol has helped me in this regard. However, it sounds like you already have your answer re your particular coin.

    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."

Must have been the same dealer selling you the coin?

By the way, I get about a 14" reflection on the Obv and a 6" reflection on the Rev.

ANACS only requires 4 inches, so something is wrong here. Make sure the mirror is clear on the entire side of the coin. I have a beautful 1879-S in 65 that's a PL+ except near the reverse motto with a little haze and the mirror gets blurry. Note came back from ANACS saying it "just missed".

PCGS is even tougher on DMPL's...requiring deeper mirrors. I've been told grader's use their thumbs, instead of written text to judge reflection. Fields must be clearer than ANACS requires for the same grade; field chatter will lower the grade.

  • I didn't realize the Democrats graded coins. They're probably liberal in their grading I assume.
