Grade this toned 1939-D Jefferson, and decide if should be plasticized

So, what do you grade it, and should it be sent in? I call it a 65++, with a very good shot at 66... 2 sets of pictures, as always...

I would guess 65; notice the word guess. image No reason to have it entombed unless you're planning on selling online or working the registry imho.

I don't think it's any better than a 64. The strike is too weak for a date that can come exceptionally well struck. Check out the center of Monticells, the triangle above the pillars, and Tom's ear and the hair just behind it. I'd save the fees and keep it raw.

Send it in... good shot at 66 (if the lustre is strong).
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Send it in. 39-D is a key date in MS65+.

Looks 63-64ish to me, unless you send it to ICG.image
  • The color is too dark, they are going to kill it. Try an acetone bath first. Often Jeffersons will attract grime that can be removed with acetone. If it really is that dark 65 is you best bet. Cheers and good luck.

    MS65.

And yes, you should have it entombed.

I dunno about PCGS. I had one with nice luster, better strike and fewer marks. The ANACS guy at the show said "3 or 4".

Not really dark at all--a nice creamy grey, and the toning is really electric.

If it went anywhere, it'd go to NGC (gasp!)... not going to wait for PCGS. Also, it would be to sell... I'm deciding whether or not to sell it raw (note: not for sale yet image) Saved myself there image

MS63 Reverse of 1938 non-Full Step, looks to be MDS. although the color is attractive, the strike is weak and there are multiple contacts, so unless the luster is bold and striking the grade is limited, even for NGC. ANACS would give a truer grade since they seem less affected by the tone craze which we seem to be in.

what's that mean??? simple, really-----we're in the midst of a collector phase where the primary focus when looking at coins is color-color-color and it seems to override all other aspects of a coin. the result is that collectors who wouldn't normally collect certain issues buy them because they look nice. that's not a bad thing or an indictment of this coin in any way, just an observation of the current market state at present.

    ms-65

stick it in a piece of plastic, & you considerably reduce the market that would be interested in buying this coin.

  • Either AU58 if there is some rub or MS64 at most if there isn't. I wouldn't try it.

I agree with the majority... no higher than 64... weak strike. No reason to holder it.

My first impression was AU58, but then your second photo made me think that it's only a weak strike. So, MS64 is my best estimation (grading from photos). I would not send the coin in for grading. Sell it raw - it'll do better.

I'm leaning MS64. I'm O.K. with it having the surfaces of a MS65, I just don't think it can get that grade with an average to below average strike...even with its other positive attributes.
