  • I didn't realize NGC gave PL designations to Sac's. Does PCGS do this as well?

  • This could provide an interesting twist to an otherwise boring modern series...

You guys are just about on it.
Burnished planchets were prepared for the 2000 Sacs for the millenium celebration. A few of the planchets, apparently left over, were also used at the beginning of the run of the 2001 coin production.
NGC won't acknowledge this, as the Mint has never released confirmation. A quick glance at one of these 2001's compared with the Millenium Sacs and any mystery is quickly cleared. NGC will give these specially prepared planchets the PL designation at least (their way of tipping their hat to this coin without having to come right out and express an opinion, I guess).

Somewhat rare, especially in the upper grades.

And... there you have it! image

Is there some doubling in the date?
  • Were they in mint rolls, bags, or...?
  • Interenting the Millenium Sacs were from Denver and the leftover planchet
    struck a Phily. Sac.

Possibly they were the Goodacre planchets instead?

Were the Goodacre planchets prepared/burnished the same as the Mill. planchets?

No. It is a blury pic.

  • That could be. As you can see here The designer was paid $5,000 in specialy burnished planchets giving them a proof-like appearance.

    I don't make a habit of looking at other people's sacs, but that's a nice one.image

  • Well,

Since 40 PL have been graded so far AFTER 2000 then I'd say that it isn't that rare but still considerably more difficult to find than the non-PL specimens. Not to mention the almost 230 that have been graded for the year 2000 not including the special millenium ones.

Neat coin but it's still a sac. image

Those 230 Sacs are Millenium coins and were graded before NGC acknowledged them as such.
