I remember getting a "cull" Proof set back in the 1970s that had a nickel in it with the same color as that piece. I decided to open the set, and sell the coins as singles with nickel going for cheep money as a "cull Proof." When I cut open that section of set, I get a big whiff of a glue - chemical smell. I think that defective packaging may have created this "blue gem."

I wish I still had that "cull nickel" from so many years ago ...

I noticed a bad smell when I've opened proof sets with toned coins, and they are usually floating around loose in the cello, so I like the glue theory.

I'm glad Marty posted that picture, because I've got some pretty blue nickels I can't take a good picture of. I'll have to try the yellow background.
