Nice Ken! Here's my raw one that I picked up a couple of weeks ago. My pics don't do it justice - looks much better in hand:

"What are you putting that tape on your nose for?"
    "Exactly."

  • Very nice toner!

  • Thanks guys, I won it in this ebay auction. It was
maybe 10x what a "normal" coin would sell for, but sometimes you just have
to step up to get the nice ones. As I stated in the title, this one is going away
for a very long time, except that it will be one of the first I frequently pull out
for show and tell over the coming years! image

TayTay, I'm only seeing red X's here on your coin.

Nice coin Ken. What do you make of this one. Real or fake toning?

    Vince,

That's one I'd like to see in hand. The reverse, as the seller states, does
look Appalacianish. The obverse kind of looks more along the lines of
album-toned ring pattern with Appalacian colors. As you know, the
Appalacian coins themselves are quite controversial. Some of them are
quite stunning and I do own three.

I don't remember seeing one quite like it, but these War nickels do
sometimes tone differently than any other coins.

I would think that you'd have a hard time getting it slabbed but, if you
do, it would surely bring big money!

  • TayTay,

I see your coin now - nice score! The color progression on the rainbow looks
very similar to mine, and very tight.

  • Here's one of my toned Jeffs! I got about 30 so far. I gotta take some pics of the really nice ones to post. 50-Ds are common with nice color -- but I've really come to like toned Jeffs.

I personally feel it's AT. I saw that and skipped. The obverse had the right progression, and even flow, but the colors still seemed off--those aren't the typical album colors (usually they're more blue and red). The reverse I found too splotchy for a naturally toned piece. Especially on Monticello, for example, the red and green erratically alternate.

That said, I doubt it would make it into a reputable holder, BUT, if it did, CHA CHING.

  • Of course I'll put it into a solid-craft showcase when I want to display
this coin to it's best advantage and know that it's secure! image

Probably in something like this, along with a few pretty sisters...
