1795 half cent - ANACS VG08 - shot at an upgrade, maybe?

Hi, Everybody -

I won this half cent a while back from Heritage:

1795 1/2C VG08

I like it because it's relatively problem-free (not net graded by ANACS). I'm wondering if PCGS and NGC would also grade such a piece VG08, or if it's a potential upgrade. What do you think? Either way, I think it's got character!

Can't tell anything from those shots. They should do better photographs - a lot better.

I don't think it will upgrade. It looks nice where it is.
  • No chance with the reverse like that.

crack it out & leave it out! it's too nice a coin to be stuck in a piece of plastic!

  • Even tho the coin is dark, I really really Like the design on that coin. I also like the 1 cent piece with the Apple Cheeks variety...Sheldon 23 I think.....They are way High on my coolness meter. To answer your question, I have no idea. Based on what has been said.....Keep it right where it is.

  • Yes Dorkkarl, I stated in my post I like Both the Half cent That he is talking about and the large cent too. I added a comment about the 1 cent piece since both designs are similar.

    Right here:

  • I don't think it would upgrade, it might not even cross. The "applecheek" variety is S-24. You were very close.

It is normal for these early half cents to weak in the center of the reverse as this piece is. Still, with out the words, "HALF CENT" visible, I don't see this piece getting more than a VG, all things considered. The coin has a lot of wear, and while strike is the reason for the missing words, they still are not there, which is the bottomline.

AND you always run the risk of PCGS or NGC declaring that the coin has bee "fixed" or recolored at one time whether or not that has really been done. The major services don't know squat about grading copper, and undeserved body bags abound.

If you like th coin, buy it and enjoy it. Do yourself a favor and don't get caught up in the crack out game with this coin.

Yeah, put it on a railroad track. It'll look real cool then. image

More often than not, early problem-free copper in an ANACS holder has a shot at upgrading at PCGS or NGC. ANACS is rather conservative in that department. On this coin, however, I see PCGS G06 or VG8, so I wouldn't send it. I don't often see slabbed material offered by Heritage that looks like an easy upgrade.
