Anyone going to report on FUN for us, first hand?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭
I was kind of hoping that someone who's actually going to be at FUN while us poor slobs are at work can let us know what it's like on the floor. I'd be interested to see how strong prices in various areas of U.S. coins, especially type stuff, is going.

I'm soooo jealous!

Laura reports activity is brisk. There are several dealers making moves to buy up nice coins. Auctions are mixed as usual - with the top end going very strong.

  • report from the bourse floor...........

activity is indeed brisk from what I have seen so far. Toners are selling at a very nice pace and people seem to be stepping up for the nice stuff. nice Morgans seem to be selling at posted levels and even aboQuoteve posted levels for PQ examples.

    Mark Feld quotes........

The show is too big to have a quote at this time.

Foodude was heard saying he is buying nice Franklins and needs more.

Ron Sirna seems to be buying half of the toners that are for sale on the boarse floor.

fountainheadgold has been pulling out his A box of toners and wowing everybody.

A half a generation ago, we would have had to wait for some sterile, three-week old report in Coin World. Now, we are barely satisfied if we get a "real" report from the show. It's amazing!

    Thanks, JB and TDN.

I believe that a report every half hour would be acceptable.

  • It's very, very crowded on the floor with the same about to begin at the auctions above according to a dealer at 7:45 EST.

There is a real buz on the floor but dealers dealing with the same dealers rather than circulating to new faces. Everyone

suprised at the auction numbers for certain coins that are nice. You could hold the Brasher Dollars but there was an armed

guard there with his hand on a 9 mill in his belt. Thre is a lot of scrambling in the trade for nicest coins.

A brief FUN show report and a bit of advice form a dealer (who handles mostly higher grade mint state and Proof copper, nickel and silver type, classic silver commemoratives, some early 20th century singles and a bit of gold) :

While I do not carry a large inventory by any means, I have already sold approximately 2/3 of what I brought here. And, I wasn't really making much of an effort to sell. I have also been able to buy a good number of appealing coins at reasonable (as in not cheap and not overly pricey) levels.

Speaking for myself at least, the key is to be patient, pick and choose among what is available, be willing to pass on coins that are obviously priced too high, reject the ones that are just ho-hum/ordinary in quality and/or appearance and scoop up the ones that are desirable, yet still priced fairly. The percentage of viewed coins that can be obtained that way might be low, but the number of coins acquired eventually adds up.

I realize the above is easier said than done, but it can be done. It takes lots of looking, time, patience and discipline. But, the opportunities to purchase nice coins at fair prices are there, if you are willing to do the work and not get carried away.

Mark, getting all carried away is where the fun lies.

    Some very wise thoughts Mark.

My find of the day was a 1923-P Peace Dollar VAM-1B "Extra Hair". Its in a NGC MS66 slab. I've got the same coin in a PCGS MS63, but I've never seen one this nice. It is, of course, not attributed in its NGC holder. Paid regualr non-VAM MS66 price for it. If your looking for this die break it jumps right out at you and you can see it at arms length. I knew what it was as soon as I pulled it out of the box because I'm used to looking for it on this date. If your not looking for this break, however, you might never notice it...despite its size and length, because it tends to blend in with the hair. I didn't think the traffic was that tough on the floor this afternoon. I'm sure it will pick up considerably tomorrow when doors open to the public.

I thought security in the Heritage lot viewing room was a little lax myself. In the past, every lot viewer would have one person directly across from them keeping an eye on them. Today, there was one guy trying to watch 4 of us view lots. Mostly though, he was busy explaining to one of his cute co-workers that he was also a movie producer and that he had noticed she had 'the look' that everyone was looking for, and she should let him promote her. Hope he makes out with the co-worker...and while the guy may not know much about coins or security...he wasn't far off about the lady having 'the look'! And when I handed the boxes back, he sometimes wasn't even counting coins in the boxes that came back to him. I didn't want to get anyone in trouble by saying anything, but Heritage probably better get a better grip on that situation or it won't take long for some bad guys to try to take advantage. Hate to have my favorit coin swiped before I have a chance to bid on it!

The Gold Rush Collection prices realized are thru the roof! Two coins besides the Brashers just missed realizing the million dollar level - the 1833 PR67 $5 and one of the stellas.
  • roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,303 ✭✭✭✭✭
A lot of those Gold Rush coins had that "raise the roof" type look.
Is Hugon over now too? Was it Velveeta or LSM by a nose?
