Coin or vacation?

I found out yesterday that my employer is giving me an award trip for a job well done in 2004. It is a vacation for my wife and I to our choice of Maui, Grand Cayman, Cabo San Lucas, cruise, and a few other choices. If I can't take the trip, they will give me the cash, which is about $6,000. Should I forgo the trip and use the cash to buy a really nice coin (and even kick in some of my own money to get something really nice), or should I go lay on the beach for a week (and maybe play a little golf!)? If I could ever figure out how to do those voting polls, I would, but I don't know how.

Take your wife or you'll never hear the end of it.
THEN- after an awesome vacation just spend crazy money of your own on a coin & she can't say a word!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Once in a lifetime chance to get a really nice coin and it won't cost much out of pocket.
No brainer.

Vacation.
Memories are more lasting than a coin you might sell some day.

<< <i>Is the trip a "business trip"? You will certainly pay tax on the $6000 leaving you $4000 (at best). Still a nice coin, but one third less nice since you lastr thought about it. Wait a minute...you're the tax guy! >>
I think the vacation would be taxable, too. My company sent me to Arizona for a few days last year and at least part of it was taxable to me. In my case, the company "grossed up" my earnings to pay the tax. They aren't required to do so, though.
In the trip I had, the company had a short "all-hands" business meeting every day just before dinner. I guess that's how they wrote it all off as a business expense...
After 27 years of marriage, maybe vacation is the right way to go.
She can go to New England for the week and I'll go to So. Carolina or Florida. To be romantic, I'll even try to get neighboring gates at the Philly aiport when we leave.

In October, we went to the Domincan Republic for 1 week. A Great vacation can do wonders for a relationship. It was so wonderful, we are planing to have a vacation for ourselves every year from now on. Your first priority should be you and your wife - Not your coins. I know that if my husband picked a coin over me... well, there'd be hell to pay!

P.S. I got the chance to sip capuccinos in a small pizzaria off a cobble stone road and a beautiful view of the Alps. It was probably a lot nicer than viewing that "perfect" coin in a small dog house. . .

I graduated high school and 4 days later, I was being indoctrinated into the USArmy.
I got out of the Army, went to work during the summer, then went to college.
I worked 3-4 jobs putting myself through college....no summer vacation play for me.
I never had a vacation until my honeymoon. 1 week in Jamaica. I enjoyed it.
Now, 5 years later, I am getting ready for FUN and using vacation for it. I want to have fun at FUN!!!
Morale of the story.....take the vacation. Enjoy it. The only other thing I may do if I were in your shoes would be to take the money, and go somewhere else for less IF that is what I really wanted (some people have been to hawaii and are tired of it, etc etc). Do what would be enjoyable to you, but I think a vacation (I wouldn't have taken one during the times I listed above just because of how I was) is needed.
Enjoy whichever decision you make.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

You can also look at this way. If you take the coin, it could be worth more than the trip some day. Trips are great, but once they over, they ARE over, and the money is down the poop-shoot. A coin can increase enough in value so that you can sell it sometime and take an even better trip on it.
I will see that and raise you...
Take the cash, add some more money, and buy the wife some killer diamond earrings!
Or, take tha cash, spend half on a Trip, and the other on a killer classic coin.
Coins can come and go, a happy family is way too cool.
