So how come they are still ANA members?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
I received my Numismatist today, and noted a small ad from John Paul Sarosi. In the ad, both he and Kathy are listed with their ANA LIfe Member numbers.

After reading the thread about John Paul Sarosi, and the fact that just about every comment was negative (misrepresented, overgraded, cleaned coins), how come both are still ANA members and haven't been booted like Ken Pines was?

Comments

  • Good question! However, it hasn't affected Ken Pines to any degree that can be seen.

Does anyone know if Paul Sims is still a member? Same class as the others.

You have to committ murder in front of a judge to get thrown out.

Otherwise, half the ANA membership would be gone overnight.

Paul Sims is right here in town, and has a storefront. I went in there one day to look for some proof sets. I could hear dremels in back, and when I asked what the noise was, the guy in front said they were "remodeling". image

I guess so long as you are only a little crooked you can stay in the ANA. So long has you ship coins to customers after they have paid for them, you have a chance to stay in good standing. I've also seen companies get the ax and then get re-instated. It's sort of like a prostitute becoming a virgin again.

ANA membership is no gurantee that the firm is ethical or honest. It only means that they could be honest, have acted honestly recently or have not been caught lately.

Bill, the way these companies stay in the good graces of the ANA is because they offer a return privilege. I've seen several estimates in the range of only 2-4% of the coins being returned. By the time a new collector realizes he got garbage from one of these outfits, the collector can not file a complaint because he did not take advantage of the return policy.

Yes, years ago I contacted a seller on Ebay to inform him that the item he was offering was a counterfeit. His response was, "We have a liberal return policy." image I guess he would be well qualified to be a member in good standing of the ANA.

  • Usually the reason dealers get expelled is because they don't answer the ANA correspondance. So as long as you keep answering and making excuses your ok.

Being a member of the ANA is meaningless as far as ethics is concernred.

often wondered about this, what would be the "right" time limit allowed for returing coins? 2 weeks? 2 months? a year??? i'd think a line would have to be drawn somewhere.

Legitimate dealers have a return privilege for no stated reason that ranges from a couple of days to two weeks. The reason for the two day limit is that with the sale of bullion coins, speculators could "buy" the coin and then return it a couple of weeks later if the price fell. The longer time frames are for collector coins. During that time a collector will have plenty of time to decide if the piece fits into his collection.

Beyond two weeks, with most dealers, you are on your own. Being honest does not mean that a dealer is obligated to protect the customer against price changes in the market. When you buy coin, you take a chance as to whether its price will go up or down. No one will protect you against market adjustments.

The ANA states a minimum of five days.

Yep, JPS and Paul Simms are definitely part of the same crooked bunch.

    Let 'em walk the plank!

that surprises me a bit. i'd think 10 days or more would be better & still reasonable.

anyone know if rich stiles is still an ana member?
