What don't you collect?

Out of all the U.S. coin series, which would you absolutely refuse to ever collect? For me, it's any of the seated coin series. Not sure why, but the design doesn't do anything for me.

There's just too many of them that all look pretty much alike. It seems like it would be a daunting and boring task for me to try and assemble a collection. If you really like the design, I'm sure that wouldn't be the case. I also like coins that are either toned attractively or pretty much white. I know I'm not much of a purist, as most older coins will show some wear and grime. I don't often see seated coins in the state that would interest me, and I can't justify the price of the ones I do see.

All of my MS and proof seated coins are toned:

I would have a tough time collecting coins that I have found regularly in pocket change since I was young. As I was born in 1965, that would include clad coins, Lincoln Memorials, and Jefferson nickels. I would make special note and addition of coins made for circulation, but rarely seen in circulation: Kennedy halves, Ikes, SBAs, and Sacs. I do not like any of these. Exceptions: state quarters and bicentennial issue quarter, half, and dollar.

Glad you agree Larry, all those distracting colors, and you can't even play with it when it's all covered in that plastic shell. Seriously though, there all always exceptions, but assembling a full set that looks like that would be difficult. And if you can, my hat's off to you.

Edited: Looks like RYK already proved me wrong!

I didn't answer your question, sorry. A couple US series that I don't care much about are the modern small dollar coins, the SBA and the Sac. But hey, I bought a 1981 mint set just to get the PDS Susies, in case I ever decide to put together a set. image

  • There are certain coins in each series that I enjoy. And I really like Commems like the one Fats posted. The other Commem that I really like is the Oregon Trail. How could anyone not like that coin???

I won't buy lincolns, roosevelts no matter what dates, conditions or quantities or possible profit margins involved in even flipping them. I was offered almost half a jeep cherokee full of just "early" and "earlier" lincoln circ rolls once. A whole roll of s-vdb's, quarter of a roll of 22 plains..... that kind of collection. They were accumulated over many many years and all neatly stored in plastic rolls, in order, in boxes. I referred the guy to a Minnesota dealer I do business with. I DID however load up my jeep ( more than once as there were roll sets and single sets of a lot of other material) and shipped everything for the guy. And I bought everything else but I wouldn't buy the lincolns. I also advised the guy what he should expect to get for them ( which he got).

I could think of others but those are top of the blacklist.

There is no US series I would refuse to collect at least one example of for my type set. As for year mint sets I only go for series I have a ghost of a chance of completing in XF or better so cost rules out a lot of series.....

I hate seated coins. Like this one from the upcoming ANR auction I'm lusting after for my type set, except that I have $4,500 in property taxes to pay this month. Don't you just hate Seated coins like this?

I'll collect anything but can't afford to pay full value for rare coins, hence I end up
collecting where there is little or no competition. It allows one to have collections
of scarce coins on a budget.

I don't think there is any series I wouldn't collect. But there are some I'm happy with just an example of.

The only thing I have trouble with is Barber Halves. The design doesn't translate well to a coin that size (my opinion only), and they are expensive in any grade over XF!

Still looking for that nice example for my type set......

Right now, the only coins that I absolutly refuse to collect is anything in an ACG holder.

I'm not too fond of bent coins, either.

    I dont collect :

Moderns = hich includes designs still being used today. (I dont search for them either, but will keep an eye-out for a potential money maker, if by chance it comes along. But its a quick turn for me, or I am not intrested)

Commemoratives= I think some of the designs are nice and artistic, but I just cant get into something that was not intended to be used for commerce. (I will buy one occasionally for re-sell purposes, but usually only if its priced cheap. )

Gold= Never have owned one in my personal collection for very long, but I see myself picking up a nice early $10. at some point.
(Will buy for re-sell, if thier is room to make a buck)

Bullion related, mintsets, proof sets, mint type prodcts= Dont buy at all, absolutely no intrest. If I buy for re-sell purposes, then its becuase they were dirt cheap.

Darkside= (Again very artistic, lots of history, and fun to view), but no intrest at all aquiring any

Yea, those seated coins are pretty boring ...

What would I never collect? Any post 1950 coins in slabs. They are either in albums, Capital holders or in the orginal mint packaging.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

That 's the only seated coin that I like. Very nice, Bill.image
  • Any key date coin that is not slabbed, Morgans, early commems, three cent silvers, large cents. Any coin that is easily counterfeited I refuse to buy such as 09 S vdb, 14 D and any trade dollar. Too risky for the cost. I'll just stick with modern coins that have not been around long enough to be tampered with or nose greased.

Very nice 76-P, RYK, and that 75-CC in the ANR sale is just beautiful!

P.S. What don't I collect? Damaged modern circulated coins in glued-together homemade slabs with misspelled and inverted labels that are printed with a faded ribbon from a dot-matrix printer . . . and are overpriced from somebody who will not take a personal check and charges a hugely inflated handling fee . . . unless I like the coin. image
