What has been the toughest coin for you find to fill a set??

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
One of the hardest for me has been a 1942 Type 2 Jefferson Proof with attractive tone. I've hoped to find a PR65+ with some color and have found one of two things----brilliant coins or "toned" coins which are really just hazed dogs. In all my looking there's only been one nice coin, a semi-rainbow colored PR68. This is kind of tough to explain since the Type 2's are 35% silver and should be available with some degree of color. Finding standard composition Jeffersons with nice color has been much easier.

Is there a coin in a set you're compiling which has proven to be just as elusive??

Interestingly, I was just thinking about my perception that the key dates and semi-key dates in the Dahlonega $5 series are not necessarily the ones that are the toughest to find, but they are the ones that are toughest to pay for once you have found them (read: the most expensive). I have seen fewer 1855-D $5's in auctions and dealer inventories, than I have 61-D's and 42-D LD's, despite that the latter two are considered #1 and #2 in overall scarcity and the 1855-D is #10 (of 26).

    1939-S R40 Jefferson (non-FS) MS66 PCGS.

    Are they even out there?
    When in doubt, don't.

In my Morgan VF album, I'm having a dickens of a time finding a '85-CC in VF. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a hundred or so in MS64 & 65, but try finding a nice one in VF20 to 35! I tried BST with no success, have been watchin EBAY for 6 months with no success...I'm hoping FUN will be my lucky venue.

Maybe this is part of the reason you're having such a hard time....

I had a tough time finding an 1866 Shield nickel in 62/63 that I liked the strike. It took almost 2 years.

Not sure it is a set in the sense you mean, but I am trying to get all D snd S mint rpm's for the 1943 cents, and the s-mint rpm's are very hard to find. Of the eight listed, I have three, they just never show up.

dorkkarl, been thinking about your sig line, and if both theories do make the same prediction, how can only one be correct, simpler or not?

A true business strike of the 1884 or 1885 3-cent nickel in circulated condition. I spoke with JP Martin (ICG) about these coins and agreed that it's extremely difficult, even for the pros, to tell the proof from a business strike for these guys.

One reason why I didn't even start on a set of Liberty Nickels is that the 1890-95 in MS 66 are virtually impossible to find, and when you find one of them, you'll have to sell a few family members -- and family members that you actually like -- to buy them. The '07 is also equally unavailable.

Still looking for an MS67 1936-S Lincoln for my registry set. I've seen a few with spots but nothing I quite like.

1885 V Nickel in PCGS MS64. I've found one in the last four months. I had the money set aside for it for about three months, then I spend it, and two days later... one pops up on Heritage. Errr. At least I can take comfort that it dont look like a really nice one.

1904-O Barber half in VF30-XF45...uncleaned. Sure, I have seen some really nice baking soda scrubbed examples, but I want one with that antique silver toning. Five years and counting now.

Al: You are right that 1942-P Type 2 proofs can be a bear to find in attractive condition. Luckily, I have a pair of nice ones from Jeff proof collectors of note, a gold tinged PR-67 from Barry/BNE and a blue/purple-tinged tone PR-66 from Carl. Among my best early Jeff proof set, probably the most difficult coin to find, at least that pleased me, was a 1951. Finally won a PR-68 at a Heritage auction that I thought was a steal. It has a DCAM reverse and would grade DCAM overall except the rainbow toning on the obverse deprives the coin of the needed contrast. Here's a shot of the reverse (marks on slab, not coin). I can't imagine there are many better '51s out there ...
