Good deal or semi good?

I was monitoring an auction for an MS63 1941 S Walker in a PCGS slab last night. Auction ended at $92.00. Seems like the guy that won it got a great deal as the trend is $125 or more in MS63. I can't believe how much these later date Walkers are going for when five years ago the were more abundant and going for half the price they are now.

It's all about the strike on this issue. A full, or nearly full strike (thumb showing...) means he got a killer deal. A (notorious) weak strike? Not so much so.

Booming luster is also worth a healthy premium.

  • Well, the photo is not the best but the strike looks decent. What do you think Cameron?
  • Looks like a 64 to me but there could be luster issues with the coin
which we are not seeing. I'd say he got a pretty good deal.

Yes, these coin does look like an MS-64 from that photo, but photos are not much good for spotting 1 point differences in the MS grade scale.

This issue is very price sensitive to price. If the coin is a really flat struck example, which is the norm, it's not worth the bid price. Well-struck examples with great eye appeal are worth more than "ask" at least in MS-63 and 64.
