How accurate is the greysheet?

Any opinions of the accuracy of the greysheet overall? Is it worth the money or is it pretty much as accurate as anything you can get online for free? The heritage archives are free (if you know how to get into them, they are free even with no Heritage account heh) but I'm looking for something a little easier to use...

  • If it was as innacurate as the online free ones then EVERY dealer and major collector would not pay $100 for it.

It is well worth the $100 yearly fee and I sugest you buy it. Yes, there are some innacuracies but they are much smaller then the free price guides. Remember, you get what you pay for.

  • If you don't want to pay the full yearly fee, you can go online and buy and download whichever greysheet issue you may happen to want! Don't get much better than that!

  • It depends whether buying or selling. If you're a buyer, it's always unrealistically too low; try to sell, and it's XX% "back of bid"!
  • It depends on what you are talking about as far as accuracy goes. If you are considering what things should go for on ebay...you can forget it. You regularly see common stuff on go ebay at around 25% below Bid. On the other hand, you can throw Bid and Ask out the window on the less common coins.

It's just a guide for dealer to dealer interaction. It's like asking if The Kelly Blue Book is accurate. They're both for current industry standard, but may not have any real bearing in the real world.

Worthless for registry quality coins. It's fairly accurate for raw "book" coins.

There is no accurate price guide. But given the competition (PCGS online price guide, Numismedia, Redbook,Coin Values/CW Trends, or Coin Prices/Numismatic News) this is the only one to buy when it comes to matching wits or haggling with dealers and other collectors.

On the whole, I think it's fine for properly graded coins that are regularly bought and sold. If you're into 20th Century coins at MS 65 or below, I think you should be fine with it. OTOH, when it comes to many classic type coins (ie., pre Morgan $s), forget it.

As far as E-Bay is concerned (I do not buy or sell on E-Bay), I would treat everything there as sight unseen, and use Bluesheet -- not Greysheet -- pricing.

You can also use the Heritage auction archive, but in general, I find it reflects prices for low-end-for-the-grade coins.

It's the bible for raw moderns since most of them are listed and few buyers or sellers
will go contrary to what's listed. However it doesn't list any moderns other than the
raw ones so is nearly worthless to most dealers and collectors.

It's not unusual to find buyers of the raw moderns at well over ask if one is patient.
Even the raw market is pretty thin so if someone needs something in quantity quickly
they have to make a strong offer to get it. Even a common raw modern like a hundred
rolls of 1984-S PR quarters would probably require a buy price above ask.
