Where to buy proof sets from. Who do you recommend?

Looking to start buying proof sets but don't want to buy from auctions and get bunked. Who do you recommend? I was looking at Harlan J Berk. Any info appreciated.

I've only bought them from e-bay and coin shows. Some members here can make a living off the sets they snag on e-bay.
  • Depends on years... 1990s proof sets? Pretty much anywhere... shows and coin shops are good places to look... 1890s Proof Sets? Good luck, and I hope you have a wad of cash, but you're gonna need to talk to the bigger dealers for that... 60s proof sets? Talk to MadMarty and Russ... I'm pretty sure they have tons of proof sets they would sell you...

There are local coin shows in your area, there is usually a dealer or two who has a stock of the more recent issues. Actually you can get pretty decent sets back to 1955. Before then many of the better coins have been sold as singles and what remains are the pieces that have been dipped and are not very nice. Still if you are willing to pay a small premium and NOT have cameo Proofs, you can find original sets from the early 1950's now and then.

For the 1936 to '42 era, most of the complete sets do not contain really nice coins. Dipped is the rule here. If you want really nice coins, you have probably have to buy singles or get lucky and find a older set that has never been broken. Those are getting to be as rare as hen's teeth.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
