...and if you do not wish to bid on any of these or wish to make a quick holiday purchase, I happen to have a nearly complete set, lacking the Ultra High Relief, 27-d, 30-s, and 33, available for $595,000.

A set of St. Gaudens double eagles? Sorry, but that is WAY OVER my numismatic budget. I'd much sooner add some early gold type coins to my collection if I had that much money to spend.

And I'm not so sure that these high gold prices are going to last. At least for the common dates, buying a lot a Saints right now could be your first step to the financial cemetary.image

I'm a dealer, a be it a small one, and I would not want to have a bunch of common date St.Gaudens $20 gold coins in inventory right now at these prices.

  • With gold at its current level, which is affecting most gold coins, including saints, I think its a pretty bad time to start a Saint set.

Well maybe not generics Bill, but you wouldn't want a few boxes of quasi generics? ( the d's and s's)

I've been trying to accumulate them. I can sell hundreds in matter of hours.

Who knows, maybe I'll lose. But I don't think so.

Yes, generics - that exactly what I mean.

So long that slightly better dates don't go up too much, you are OK. But watch out of that former $1,300 coin becomes a $2,000 coin. Then that game is getting a bit risky.

My only problem is that there are too many set breaker coins. For the price of a 27-D alone you can have a very nice Ferrari and you may not be able to find the 27-d for years in an acceptable grade. The average collector (and even most deep pocket collectors) have no chance of ever finishing the set. If not finishing doesnt bother you, that is a different issue.

I will say that Saints are in the top 3 most beautiful coins and I am looking forward to adding a very nice one to my type set next month.

Well, I obviously love the series and don't feel I have to have the 27-d to feel complete. Even if I found one or bought one, wouldn't I then need a 1933 to feel complete?

Nah, I like the series and in fact feel they are great value here. I am NOT really talking about common generic dates although I feel those will perform well as gold moves higher. I mean the tougher dates in higher grades like MS63+
