NTC Graded Coin

I have a 1909 Indian Head Quarter Eagle in an NTC holder graded MS63. I paid about the price that PCGS lists for an MS62.

I have a few questions about NTC and this coin. Sorry, I tried to post a picture but I can't get my camera to focus very good.

Has anyone had any experience with NTC grading, since I bought it I've heard that their grades can't be trusted. Has anyone had the NTC coin regraded and how much of a difference was there?

Does anyone have any good pictures of this coin in MS63 or MS62, maybe I can compare the pictures and get a better idea.

Thanks,
Millertime

  • The Indian Gold is next to impossible to grade from pictures. NTC doesn't have much credibility. image

In general, NTC isn't very trusted.

But I'd sooner trust an NTC MS-63 than an NTC MS-68.

Every now and then, a less-than-pie-in-the-sky-graded NTC coin is close to accurate.

My concerns would be that it's really AU-58 or that it's counterfeit. Mostly the latter.
  • I read a post on this site about counterfeit gold and I almost peed my pants. My coin doesn't look nearly as bright and shiny as the one pictured. Probably doesn't mean anything but if it's counterfeit it's not that obvious.

Millertime, image If you do a search using NTC you'll get alot of hit's. It all depends on the coin. Most do not cross well. Good Luck with your's, Lee
  • Isn't the headband feathers and the eagle feathers good indicators of grade?

I was hoping I could compare a picture or two of those areas.
  • I think good deals CAN be found in NTC holders, you just have to know what you are buying... I recently bought a Bust Half that I grade about VF20-VF25, with an old cleaning, but an otherwise nice looking grey coin... NTC graded it F12, and I got it at a very nice price... deals can be found (Like with any TPG) you just have to know how to grade and what you're looking at...

  • Hopefully the coin isn't too grossly overgraded like most NTC holders, but If you paid 62 money for an NTC 63 coin, plan on loosing your shorts if you ever decide to sell it.

Or cleaned. NTC isn't a grading company, they're a fancy holder with a label.

The indian head quarter eagle is a very hard coin to grade, especially from photos..... and a lot of counterfeits exist in this series. I would NEVER buy an ntc graded piece of gold, unless I was very knowledgable in the series AND had the coin in hand..... but I hope yours is OK.....

  • If I were in your shoes right now... I'd be sending that coin to ANACS to get it certified... I wouldn't be able to sleep until I knew it was genuine... or fake... image

  • Is ANACS grading pretty well respected. I understand there's always the possibility of coins being graded wrong by any grading company so I'm just wondering if in general ANACS is respected.

    Thanks,

ANACS is a great company, very collector frendly. Their slab will not bring the prem that PCGS does right now, but a very good and well respected firm.

I think the general agreement is that PCGS and NGC are like Coke and Pepsi, ANACS is like Dr. Pepper, ICG is like 7-UP, and the rest, well you know.
  • ANACS is much better then NTC.

The rest are like what? Iced Tea?image
