I've owned plenty of Morgans in the past, including a number of CC's, a
few semi-keys, PCGS/NGC slabbed as high as MS66, but I haven't owned
any in at least a couple of years now.
Am I still a real coin collector?
Is there hope for me?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
I keep them all in pairs.
slabs...both neat toners!

Real collectors don 't own Morgans.
I don't own any buffalo nickels......as you said I have owned many before, but have not owned one in years
I do own plenty of Morgan's though so....I guess that wil have to supplement!!!!!
Nope. Send them all to me, especially the heavily tarnished ones. I will help you all become true collectors!
don't worry, it probably means you're immune to all the "hobby hype" and childlike fascination with the big cartwheels. i own a couple and they're mostly 1878's----i prefer to put my coin-dollars into other more interesting Numismatic items like the Bickford and the Whipple pictured below. they have all but the rarest Morgan Bullion beat by a country mile in the actual rarity game, the cool factor and price. what they lack is bragging rights, but that's all ego and who needs an overabundance of that commodity??
sit tight and hold onto those Nickels, we'll play show-and-tell this April.

I usually have a couple in my buy/sell group.
i find the same thing as you. i'm grateful for Morgans, though, without them the hobby wouldn't be as large as it is and the shows would be smaller and held less frequently. i am a bit jealous, also. they have the Silver Dollar Show in St. Louis, why don't they have the Jefferson Nickel Show in nearby Jefferson, Missouri??
how boring would that be??!!??

could make it to that one. The problem is that the state of Virginia would
pitch a fit!
I believe alot of people don't collect Morgan's because their so darn expensive. However they are the most collected coin in the world.I have a M/S slabbed collection and only missing 7 coins for the completed set.If I had it to do over,I would have limited it to the Carson City series only in Mint State and expecting to invest maybe $15.000.00.
Collecting is all about what your pocket book can afford. This doesn't mean your a bad collector,it just means you must collect a less expensive series. Also, collectors taste are different, some like to sample all types of coins and some have found just one or two series that they like.
I collected coins as a kid and sold most of coins when I got married and went to college. In the past 2 years I have started collecting again and I've promised mayself that I would buy the best collection I could afford and lucky for me it is the Morgan Series.I have also bought the complete Kennedy series,Roosevelt series,Walkers Set,
Mercury dime series,Sacagawea series,Statehood proof series,Complete M/S Peace Dollar set,Franklin Halfs set.
I've made up for lost time and lost memories about my childhood coin collecting.I will leave these coins to my 2 daughters and my grand children to enjoy.
I don't believe their is any better hobby than coin collecting. If only the coins good talk and tell their stories, wouldn't it be wonderful to here all the history these coins hold.Especially the Morgan Dollars.
I would love to start a Buffalo nickel collection, but I know this will be another expensive challenge.I try to buy only the best coins and these Buffalo's are very hard to come by.But what a wonderful series of coins.
Good Luck to you Ken,
TOM
Ken, you can always buy one of these!!

and a 1990-O PCGS MS 67 with a flawless face and surfaces. Gonna try for a MS-68 on it
but I am sure the High Lords of Grading will rebuff my every effort.
Camelot
for the $5 note.
I have owned many nice Morgans in years past, just none presently.
I have no desire to try for a set of them, but will need at least one stunner
for that type set that's nagging at me to start.
Or a CC dollar set would be cool.
Or a nice toner or three!

The MS 64 was sold for cost plus grading fees. Kept the 2 MS 65s for six years and sold them this April. I have one for my type set. It's a beautiful PL '84 CC in MS 66. It has a neat swath of cobalt blue toning between 12:00 and 3:00 on the reverse, near the rim.
I prefer the Seated to the Morgan $s, but they are frighteningly expensive (and graded more harshly, too).

I thought every one liked Morgan dollars. I thought they were the backbone of the coin industry. There have been several books wrote about these cartwheels, so there must be some interest.
So far comments have been from tired of seeing too many of them at shows to down right hating them.
If you don't own one, thats OK. But there's plenty of them out there if you want one or a few dozen. I am amazed at how many are in dealers inventorys. Looks like that would tie up several million dollars of well needed operating capitol.
Oh well, if there are any Morgan dollar collectors left out there, could you please chime in. Maybe that will cheer me up.
Just kiddin... I understand that in our mutual hobby of coin collecting, some areas just don't interest others, just as some areas don't interest me. Just ranting over my first cup a joe.
Have a good day.
