question about whether you "crack-out" PCGS slabs

lavalava Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭
On a regrade coins get cracked out by PCGS anyway, so I would think it makes little difference who cracks it out, and since a coin could get damaged, I would think it is safer for PCGS to crack it out.

Does anyone feel strongly about cracking out PCGS coins and submitting raw? If so, why?

I sent them two coins in the holders and let them crack them out. I went two for two on upgrades.
So based on that, I will only crack out of other TPG holders.

One must consider the risk of getting a lower grade or damaging the coin. I will crack out lower value coins. I'm too chicken to crack out higher value coins.

It depends. Most of the time I crack them out. Regardless of the fact that they crack them out, they still have access to the original grade just by checking the computer system. The only time I don't crack them out is if it's a series I don't feel complete confidence in. For example, I thought one of my Two Cent Pieces was undergraded, but I haven't dealt with zillions of them, so I sent it in holder intact. It did upgrade, though.

  • I wonder if the graders know it was a regrade submission rather than a raw submission. Even though they are looking at the coin raw, it must be obvious what the grade used to be and what grade the submitter is looking for, for it must be a somwhat borderline coin between the two.

When I talked to customer service I was told regrades wouldn't be cracked out. If have a coin in a OGH I don't want it cracked out if it won't be upgraded. Was the person I spoke to incorrect?

Not sure what OGH is, old green holder?, but regrades get cracked out.

I believe the presedential review service does not crack out.

Yes, it is old green holder. I wish PCGS customer service knew their stuff a little better.

I am 4 for 4 on upgrades sending PCGS coins in still in their holder. I cracked 1 out and it did not upgrade.

I have sent 4 ANACS in their holder in and they came back the same grade and I have sent 3 that I cracked out and they upgraded.

So, PCGS coins go in the holder (if I think they will upgrade). Any other TPG that I think will go up a grade get cracked out.

Bearcave, you have me wondering. If you don't crack out a TPG slab and submit to PCGS with a "cross at any grade" instruction, does PCGS grade the coin in the slab or out, and do they keep a notation of the former grade? I should ask DH tomorrow.

  • I'm sending in 6 crossovers and put Good-4 as my minimim grade (several MS down to VF-25). Then, in another submission I'm sending in an 1892CC Morgan $1 NGC MS-64, and 1889CC Morgan $1 NGC AU-53, with express service in NGC crossover. My next group is economy; a mix of regular (crackout) NGC Morgans and "OGH" (crackout) PCGS MS 62/63/64 Pls and DMPLs. I'm trying for an upgrade while keeping the PL and DMPL PCGS designations, because some are really nice. Yet a forth group is going through a top dealer as crackouts. I have a idea on what has a good shot and what's a streach. The most solid, no questions coins are the '89CC, '92CC based on multiple dealer opinion, but it will be interesting to see what happens left in the NGC holder. Conversely on the PCGS PLs- DMPLs that are crackouts. (I'm keeping the tags for reference). Frankly, I hope all the submission theorys turn out to be just superstition, and I get back all the same grades, for coins sent the same day. We'll see!!!

I contacted PCGS again about whether they automatically crack out a coin that is a regrade and got this response:

The coin will be reholdered only if it is upgraded.

    Thank you,

I just recently 'cracked' out a couple of Morgans and re-submitted them raw. I was 1 for 2....The one that crossed was in an 'OGH' the other was in a '1st Generation holder'. Just remember a couple of things:

    1. If you crack them out, use something like a Dremel tool to open the holder. This is what I use.
    2. Submissions must be of the same type, meaning all raw or all regrades. You can not mix them on the same submission.

Anyway you want to do it, good luck! image

I've been told that through e-mail and over the phone. I guess I'll have go to the Q&A forum. I think this is real problem with PCGS if I'm being told incorrectly by customer service.

Russ is right on this. The only diff. re a raw submission and an in holder submission is that the coin's owner cracks out the coin re the former, while PCGS makes a note of the grade (if it's in a PCGS holder), they crack it out, and they reholder it (because they cracked it out in the first place) re the latter.

I just had two failed PCGS in holder upgrade attempts returned to me from the "trade and grade" last week. The coins came back in the same grades as before, but in new holders (new inserts, etc).

If this is the case then it needs to brought to customer service's attention. They should not be giving out incorrect information. I also had a problem when I called them about the flag inserts, got 2 answers on how to submit them and niether one was right.
