Bulletin: 1945 FB 66 Merc sells for $1700 HUH??

marcmoishmarcmoish Posts: 6,274 ✭✭✭✭✭
Superior sold tonite this 1945 Mercury dime as PCGS 66FB for $1700 (before the juice) . I was told before the sale "dog, rubbish and sud be ACG" but I am surprised PCGS would even allow (for that matter even Superior) to sell such a popular dime obviously NOT full bands at all. I mean (can someone linky) the center bands looks like my turkey sandwich image . What does "virtually full bands" mean in this description??

Obviously most agreed as it sold for a paltry amount (a true FB sells for well over 10K if available corectly graded. But even the price it realized is nuts for no band image

  • Do you have a link or something?
  • Maybe pcgs bought it. Didn't they buy that infamous spotted pf70 1963 Lincoln from auction?
  • hmmm, this offers more proof that there is a premium for partially split, 90%, 95% split bands mercs. I know a dealer that likes to markup up mercs that aren't quite fully split. Same with nickels...described as 4 steps

Here is the link I referred to above - it differs with the Superior site's price realized - does anyone know what really occured in actuality?? Superior shows 0 bidders while EBAY has 6 bidders.

  • DID NOT SELL. You can go to Superiorgalleries.com, and look at prices realized for the "Ana" show. Only about 50% of lots sold...very poor auction results, with a lot of dealer lots with unrealisitic and crazy reserves.

Virtually is close but no cigar. Such a scam. That does NOT mean full band. If the holder does not say FB, then it is NOT.

I still find it funny people buy coins from Ebay. Most dealers I have sincere talks with say they sell their 'junk" there that nobody wants, or cheap stuff not worth carrying around. So be it, I guess. Sucker born every minute, matured ones continue every 30 seconds....
