A tougher date Morgan 95-s or 03-s in ms63 or maybe a nice CC mint appropriate to the price and grade.

image Best Coin Forum anywhere! I'm considering the same thing but only about $1,000. I'm too new here to honestly answer your question. Some really nice coins, some finest know, at anrcoin.com. Browse Lots for "The Frog Run Farm Collection". This auction run's 11/30 through 12/01. Sorry I couldn't be more helpfull. Lee
  • I don't think I could do just one coin... my choice would definately have to be... as many R6 and R7 CBHDs it could buy me... image

$5,000 coins are harder to sell than say 5-$1,000 coins for most collectors- so I might not spend the whole $5,000 on one coin. But if had to buy one coin it would be something I really liked and not an investment type of thing- maybe a high grade $5 indian with cool toning. mike image

I'd buy something with true rarity and value. Rare date Seated, Bust or early gold. Would stay away from super high-grade material.

Actually that is quite an easy question for me. I would buy a Proof Cameo Morgan, highest grade I could get for the money. And image

I'd buy an early gold piece.

    capped bust 5$
  • I'd say early gold as well, but keep in mind what darktone said. And welcome to the boards!

  • Tough call.......if it's for an investment then probably a 1916-D Merc Dime in what ever MS grade that would buy me.....or AU if that's as high as I could go.

For my own collection I think I would shoot for a circulated 1793 Wreath Cent image

I'd look at a nice, original 1795 Flowing Hair dollar in VF-20 to VF-30.

An MS 93-CC Morgan, or AU 89-CC Morganimage

Ok, if you're not a Morgan or CC fan, an AU16-D Mercimage

I will go for a choice seated material, 50c no motto MS64 (and up) with some eye appealing and 1$ MS63 (and up) with some eye appealing only.

    If only this was 1964.
  • A coin that has value due to rarity, posterity, condition(eye appeal) and demand. All need to be considered with a distribution of consideration on all the four.

    So.....

    Old
    rare
    pretty
    and wanted.

The only way I'd spend $5000 on a single coin would be if it's worth $10,000.

  • The 09-S VDB has always ben a good performer, they are liquid/in demand. You could get a 65RD for about $5K. The 55 DDO is another cool coin that is liquid and performs well.

I'd say a great buy is a truly MS-64 Bust Half (any date) so long as it is a Real MS coin and has some beautiful toning.
These list for $3k retail, so you have some leeway.

1909-S VDB's seem to be coming out of the woodwork, I'd avoid them now.
    Gold: I Think a nice classic $5 in MS62 or a $3 in MS-63.
A nice AU 1794 Cent would be a great choice too.
If you like Morgan $$ I'd think a PR-65 would be a good choice.

Of corse, Flying eagle and Indian cents make great choices.

Depends on whether you want a rare date or a type coin. I typically see what everyone else is doing and do the opposite.

    1) Don't know the grade, but for $5K, you could get an attractive PF Half or Large Cent. These coins aren't hyped and maintain their value.

    2) If you like 19th Century type, that $ should be able to get you a nice No Motto Seated Half in MS 65 or a With Motto Seated Half in MS 66

I'd stay away from the finest known anything.

    A decent 3-legged buffalo nickel

  • I'd get a real sweet 3 cent silver proof or a 2 cent silver proof. Infact any of the proofs from the 1800's look great.

1893-s Morgan, it will always be the key!

5K wont buy a MS 16-D Merc any more.

I'd go with a VF 93-S morgan... or any combination of key dates that would add up to 5K.

I'd just give it to a person that needs it like me or try to find a perfect 1922 plain and a 55 Double Die Lincoln Cent to complete a collection.

Not key dates, but semi-key dates. The dates that you can just never find anywhere.
  • pursuitoflibertypursuitofliberty Posts: 6,909 ✭✭✭✭✭
It would be hard for me to place it all in one coin. I'd probably want to buy three to six pieces in the 800. to 1700. range, probably semi-keys for my collections.

However, if it had to be just one ... I think I'd try to find a Choice Capped Bust (Large Size) Quarter

A proof Morgan commensurate in grade and price would also be nice. I tried to answer initially as though I mite be buying a coin in line with my collecting interests.

If I had to have just one coin at 5k , then I would go with a :

    An early $5.00 gold
    Nice Bust dollar
    or Early choice Bust quarter

09-s VDB are overpopulated (extremely popular, but thier are really lots for sale on any given day?)
The 16-d dime is another extremely popular coin, but I dont think you could get a True AU anymore for 5k
the 01-s quarter in good is already at 6k, and too much. Needs to be Full rim VG or better anyway, and you wont get into that for 5K by a long shot.
The 93-s in VF is a decent suggestion, but that is actually the grade at which most are located. (A nice choice original Vf-30 would work)
the 16 SLQ is over 5k in Fine, and Vg's are lacking eye-appeal. The 32-d and S washington's are priced quite high as compared to thier scarcity and at the current prices for 63, and 4's TOO high IMO

Thier is one coin in the nickel series that I would list, but I am looking for it currently, and I dont need to create any more competition.

I might be a few thousand short on these 2 but they are my best pic and it's only one coin as per the challenge:

    #1 pic: 1854-55 arrows quarter in MS65
    1854-55 arrows half in MS65
No motto seated half - PF65 or MS65
    1872-s quarter - XF45 to AU

    2nd place coins:

    bust half MS65
    1873-74 arrows quarter MS65+
    a real MS65 bust dime
