It is NOT Gay to Collect Coins. It's NOT!

I had a friend at work, without knowing I was a Numismatist, say at lunch time yesterday that any hobby, "such as coin collecting; stamp collecting, or model railroading is gay".
He continued by stating, "some Poindexder punk dude that sits around in his basement and plays with trains, or fondles coins behind the closed door to his bedroom is obviously one who doesn't understand the finer things in life, such as chasing tail and getting laid".

He's normally such a bright guy I was taken aback a bit by his bold statement.

Collecting coins is NOT image, absolutely NOT image gay. No way.

    But, that would require I stand just inches away from him, for a period of time, as he looked at the coins (no way would I trust him to take the coin from me and look at them...). There lies the irony as wouldn't that be gay?! image

    Chalk that one up to ignorance and ignore his stupid arse. I'm sure there are hobbiests who are gay and there are people without hobbies who are also gay. I collect currency and played with model trains as a kid, so by his logic I must be twice as gay. Hmm... but if he asked my fiance, SHE would tell him that my hobbies haven't stopped me from chasing tail and getting laid.

    Coin collecting is clearly not for homosexuals. (I hate when a perfectly good word is perverted by them). Coin collecting is for anyone who likes art/history/beauty/etc. Young/old/girls/boys/rich/poor can all enjoy it. I am happily married and I enjoy collecting even more than I should, but I still like sex. Just don't make me choose between the two image

    What a bunch of nonsense. There's absolutely no sexuality issues when it comes to coin collecting. I do want to put this question up. If the majority of coin collectors were gay and you weren't, would you still collect coins? I would because I don't give a crap what someone's sexuality is as long as it is consenting adults.

    It's easy to chase tail when you're all braun and little brain. The blood only goes to one place at a time and with his obvious youth his collects below his belt. That get old too and some day he'll grow up.

    No one needs to defend this hobby, you love it or you don't, hey more coins for us.

    Pat, the guy doesn't sound overly bright, and I am being kind. People who make comments like that often say them in an attempt to try to mask their own inadequacies. In this case, I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the closet.

    Did you ever notice that relative to the general population, the disproportionate percentage of the weightlifter, always at the gym type of guys are gay? I am always suspicious of the loudest talkers re any subject matter.

    If he wants to say coin collecting is a nerdy guy sort of thing, to be candid, to some degree, I'd think he's right. What I'd do is talk him into going into a lesbian biker bar. Just tell him that there are a lot of hot babes there.

    Tell you what......Send the punk my way and let me deal with the little weasel. As Carl can attest, not only am I 6'5" and weigh about 315....I love coins, Have collected both stamps and trains ( my baby being a Lionel set from the '60s, I am happily married, have 2 wonderful children, 4 cats and plenty of friends who are of all caste of sexuality.

    I will be more than happy to help re-organize his disposition.

    Then we will sit down and I will have him reciting all the different VAM's of Morgans by memory by the end of the week.

    By saying it was Gay he was not really referring to homosexuality. The word gay is now used to describe things that a normal red meat eating male should not do. Meaning coin collecting is not a manly endeavor, or as it was put earlier "nerdly".

    While I have to agree coin collecting is somewhat nerdy, but if you prefer coin collecting to "chasing tail and getting laid" ----

    I prefer to think you can enjoy BOTH in life. Getting laid and coin collecting aren't mutually exclusive -- unless you're Cameron. image

    I think your tail chasing co-worker is onto something. Many here speak openly about crossing over, and some have even made reverse forward slabbing requests. Add to that the fascination with bright colors, satiny fields, and all the boasts about submission results...

    Seriously, I've given up even mentioning coins to co-workers. Either you get it or you don't, there's not much in between.

    I actually think of it this way... each of us have a little bit of "geekdom" in us (some more than others). Coin collecting is my little bit of geekdom.

    Coin collecting is probably the most non-gay thing you can do. After all, the vast majority of the coins which are the objects of our desire have female figures--Liberty Cap Large Cents, Liberty Seated Coins. Indian Cents, Saints, etc. Like I tell my wife when she asks me why I like coins so much, " you can take these ladies out any time you want and fondle them, and they will never talk back to you or ask for a credit card, except once when you buy them!".

    Shylock has it right. You either get it or you don't. In all honesty, I think the guy just picked collecting hobbies out of the thin air to make his comparisons. He is in the point in life where he hasn't figured out what impresses people or not. Besides, when it boils down to it, who cares anyway?

    The fact of the matter is that those intellectual midgets who call numismatics "gay", are the same cranially challenged mongoloids who cannot comprehend the history and aesthetics behind coins, as a result, I look at them like a would an insect. These are the same bullies who tease kids and use intimidation. I consider them of zero relevence to the real world. Enjoy the hobby, and filter out the idiots.

    yes it is NOT gay to collect coins but opinions are like rear ends everybody's got one

    i do think that there are many closet queens/latent homosexuals either married or not that are extremely unhappy on these boards

    due mainly to the fact that

    there is a huge amount of whining,complaining,"unladylike" behavior, brilliant b1tchery,catfights and envy/jealosy and greed on these boards
