"I was a dealer for many years at a coin shop and played the shop game and have attended dozens of shows. I know how to make money in the busisness.........I have dealt in tens of thousands of dollars worth of coins, buying, selling, etc. I have touched upon every aspect of coin collecting from gold, silver, and copper. I know what to buy and how to sell it. I am not trying to seem boastful or egotistical but I do know that market that I am selling to...................I used to work for a coin shop (and have been a collector) for more years then fingers on my body, and this is the next great way for me to make myself happy and possibly solve my financial issues."
Come on everyone... This was reposted by Cameron, and is a post from Greg The Great a few weeks or so ago. Read it, he claims he was a dealer for many years. And that he has dealt with tens of thousands of dollars worth of coins, buying, selling, etc.
But now he is a new coin dealer, and is asking for free material such as flips?!? Give me a break!
If he can't buy flips, etc with his own money, what a joke? What a crappy way to try and do business? Hell, I am also trying to start a small coin business. But I sure know not to spam people, ask for free stuff, check my spelling, etc.
My idea of a GTG profile would be either he is young or old. I am thinking that either he is older than me - or younger
ok really ..............
......... like maybe his Dad or other relative dealt in coins (thus the 'previous experience'), and he always wanted to learn the business. There is nothing wrong with enthusiasm - if channeled properly. Maybe someone in Indy can check him out and give us a GTG report. Or maybe he lied. Who they hell knows.
<< <i>Frankly, I don't care if he's real, or it's a big hoax... if it a hoax... he wins by disrupting this board every time some damn idiot makes up a stupid thread about jokes. This place is turning into the Open Forum where every other thread is a spoof on another thread or a joke. It needs to stop and NOW! Why do you think this is OT? Were talking about the coin dealing are'nt we?
In the event this guy is spoofing us, I hope no one on the boards has really consigned any coins to him. >>
Sorry, wasn't specific enough in what I said. This thread, while technically OT, is ok, because it does raise questions about a person of the forum who has been doing transactions through here, and the concerns people have about him. That's perfectly fine. What I was getting tired of, was all the THREADS being created that were merely spoofs and jokes, and all that it served was to push real numismatic topics off the front page. And when I posted in those threads to take it else where, I get the normal idiots who say, "Who appointed you forum cop?" And I'm basically thinking, "And what makes you guys think the rules don't apply to you?" How do you people who fall into that category answer to that?
Oh, and some said, "The self-apionted forum cops just make things worse because the bring threads back up that would normally die anyways." But what I say to that, is that we do need to self-police outselves, because the moderators aren't here 24/7/365... and if no one even says anything, it just encourages more of the same. And don't deny it... how many spoof threads popped up this afternoon after just one person made one?
These forum jokes and spoofs tend to burn themselves out within a short time, unless they are stoked by a conflict. Personally, with all the misery in the world, political strife, and overall negaitivity, I see no harm in having a laugh here now and then.
RYK, I see no harm in having a laugh here now and then. . okay, then! I think Greg the Great is homerunhall's "other" screen name and he's toying with us all!

No harm until it becomes a continous thing and gets out of hand... I somewhat agree with you... the occasional fun thread is nice... but, if it goes unchecked, then people start to think it's alright to do it anytime, any amount, and then, it really does become a problem..... get where I'm coming from?

Same repeat offenders always trying to be funny....and failing. If people were more mature and stopped doing OT threads, then there would be no need for "self-appointed" cops like George. I actually think George was correct and was polite about it. Some people just think they need to ridicule everyone else and jump on the bandwagon.
Personally, I think this thread was on topic because GTG has been trolling/spamming the coin board and the BST for coins. I also think he is real...and most likely is exaggerating some things (many here have as well) and is most likely no college or junior college and around 24 yrs old. Whether or not a hoax in the building, I have no idea. Would be nice to trust and consign a few cheaper slabs I have upgraded from (I think they would sell for more at a small coin show than on ebay and the price is roughly the same since all the fees that ebay tacks on comes to about 15% on the cheaper things). But, I am not that trusting.
It would be very cool if someone does live close enough to meet him in person or go to the next local show he has talked about.
<< <i>I just seen the thread.... I am not even going to read all this. >>
Thats fine. Just read the first post. I and everyone else here do not like to be lied to. I have heard you are 16 years old. Thats fine. But its not fine when you say you have been in the business longer than the fingers on your hands.
I wanna be able to trust you and be able to consign stuff to you.

Cameron- Thanks for all the links. I didn't get all the flip joke posts. Frankly after reading all these threads and the other related parodies on this topic, your point that it is "funny but not funny" is well taken. There is just no combination of possible explanations where something that may not be a serious concern is going on here. Hopefully, someone who has posted they've sold coins to Greg can meet up with him at a show and advise Greg how to best deal appropriately with any issues with the coin business; OR more importantly some other more significant matters that sort of stand out as concerns in Greg's posts. I don't find all the joking funny in this one particular situation.

Hey their MorganNut....
Just to clarify a little more... I do read all of the comments, concerns, quesions. I know I am not the end all be all of coin dealing and I know I have long hard roads ahead of me. I understand that some of the comments I have posted on CU have been less then admerable and I will work on all of the issues at hand. Please give me the chance to show you otherwise.
