It's funny but also not funny. He may be a legit guy trying to make it in the coin business. If that is true I applaud him. But it is the same thing over and over.
It all starts when he asks for free flips: Here
We learn that:
<< <i>I was a dealer for many years at a coin shop and played the shop game and have attended dozens of shows. I know how to make money in the busisness.........I have dealt in tens of thousands of dollars worth of coins, buying, selling, etc. I have touched upon every aspect of coin collecting from gold, silver, and copper. I know what to buy and how to sell it. I am not trying to seem boastful or egotistical but I do know that market that I am selling to. >>
and:
<< <i>I used to work for a coin shop (and have been a collector) for more years then fingers on my body, and this is the next great way for me to make myself happy and possibly solve my financial issues. >>
But then a month later asks for advise contradicting what he said before
<< <i>I would love to hear any advice that you might have to offer me on being a dealer (from where to get merchendise to a good luck wish). I plan on working at it until I beat it.... I am not a quitter and never have been so I know I won't fail at this. If any of you big time dealers or fellow collectors have a few extra coins you don't need anymore and feel like helping an upcoming rookie dealer out let me know. I feel like every item is important from wheat cents to 2004 nickels, to mercs, to roosys to everything. I know its tough in the beginning and the more support I have from the coin industry the better. Please give me some suggestions or if you have a few extra coins you don't mind parting with I would love to add them to my very first table. >>
Again here
<< <i>I am new to the coin show busisness and I am going to be doing a show in late October and I need to buy, buy, buy.... where do you big dealers get your stuff?.... I really don't know where to look outside of the obvious possibilities. >>
Then his stapler broke and he asked in the Buy/sell/forum to To buy or borrow a stapler and then edits the title and the post.
Asks for consignments and within 12 hours has more than enough and only needs $5-$30 coins
I don't want to keep making fun of him if he is really legit but the contradictions of being a former big time dealers employee and not having a clue about coin dealing doesn't make sense to me.
Now he says In this thread:
<< <i>Well to be 100% honest with you I am 18. I worked for J and J Coins in Hammond IN for 4 years or so. Some of the time I worked there I was under age laws and I was paid "under the table" (so to speak) in merchendise.... thats what got me started. Basically we got around laws by him selling me $50 worth of coins for 1 cent and stuff like that. Or me purchasing currency from him for a dime. Usually whatever I wanted to "buy" was either 1 cent or 24 cents (wierd # I know... I didn't decide it... lol) i was never tring to with-hold my age, etc. I just never felt age was necessecarly a determination of the busisness exp. a person has. For example, I did more busisness and sold more coins then most of the dealers at my last show.... I know this because I have talked with the majority of them on the phone. I might come off pompass and biligerant on the comp. but in person I know my coins and I know how to sell em. I personally sold hundreds of thousands of dollars worth at J and J's over the time I worked there. I know Coins and thats the reason I am still doing it today.... and its the reason I am doing well at my shows. >>
Yet on THIS forum in your profile it shows your birthdate as:
"Birthday:
August 31, 1987"
Meaning you are still 17 until August.
HE LIES.......
In December he gets caught again with a "gold page" lie
Now he is selling a bunch of coins that he has tried to sell in the past. They are "for the troops" - A day later the troop drive is over.

Not at all, like I said, I wish it's true. I have no clue whether it is or not, I suspect it's not though.

I don't know about you Cammy, but as thick headed as I am this was when the story became laugh out loud funny instead of just amusing

My opinion is Greg is actually in his early 20's - not the 15 or 16 some of you think, but hasn't ventured out into the world yet and still lives at home.
I received some spam PM's from him when he first showed up with his coins for sale - which where just common moderns at high prices.
He must have found somebody willing to pay $10 for a 1982-D Washington 50c, because that is what he was asking. After that, he had an epiphany about the coin business can make you money back in September. Since then he started formulating his business plan, however his lack of experience in the real world seemed to prevent him from achieving the greatness that was to be his destiny.
He has the enthusiasm of youth, but not much experience out in the real world.
I went back and looked at some of his earlier spam I received - and he was offering to sell flips
I guess I should have bought them so I could donate them to him later.
Supplies
I have double row cardboard boxes for holding the smaller coin flips and single row boxes for holding the larger coin flips. I also have plastic 2X2 coin flips and little craft envalopes (perfect for packing indivig. coins) 3.5" X 2.25".

I agree. I don't really care that much either way. But the whole thing is a bit ODD
And in general, there has been a bit more than the usual amount of OT nonsense in this forum, and it is kind of distracting. I'm not referring to this thread, or any thread in particular, but there have been many. Of course, one can simply not read a thread and move on. But I think there is an overall "tone" of the forum that is affected negatively.
I really do think it's just political tension, myself

I actually agree with this.
The Open Forum has become all politics, all the time. Anyone just wanting to goof around without dealing with all the political garbage might be tempted to let a little of it go here.
It's probably not what they should be doing -- but I can understand why it would happen. Hopefully it will die down over there a few days after the election (which can't be over soon enough, and I just want an undisputed outcome at this point).

Same here. From what I understand, he PM spammed a lot of members.

Why do you think this is OT? Were talking about the coin dealing are'nt we?
In the event this guy is spoofing us, I hope no one on the boards has really consigned any coins to him.
Didn't QDB start dealing when he was around 14 or 15?
True. Very true. However, I just called QDB and asked him about his first days in the coin dealing world. I asked him if he had enough flips to get started. He told me that he posted a thread on the forum (it was all done by teletype back then) and asked for flip donations. Several people responded to his plea and......... the rest is history. It's just a matter of time before GTG writes a book or two.
Seriously though, I also considered that this could all be a hoax. Too sad to be true. However, I am back to the conclusion that Greg is a real person. It's too elaborate of a scheme to be a hoax. The only person that I know of with enough time to carry out something so elaborate is MadMarty. I asked him and he is not Greg. Greg is a real person. Surely somebody has done business with him through the forum. Right? Have you mailed a donated check, flips, coins, etc.? He lives in Indiana, so perhaps one of our Indiana members can meet with him at a local show. There's the big ISNA show in Indy next week. I usually go, but we are doing the Tennessee show instead.
Assuming that Greg is real, then we should all be ashamed of ourselves to some degree. We are making fun of someone......a real person. I am as guilty as anyone, so I will stop posting about Greg. However, someone who is logical should sit down with Greg and give him a reality check. Otherwise, he is going to get hurt or hurt someone else (i.e. consignors).

Still, I can see how others might feel this isn't OT. It's arguable either way. There are other threads -- spoofs of GtG's efforts -- that are more arguably OT than this.
